{"id":616408,"date":"2026-06-02T04:16:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T04:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/616408\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T04:16:09","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T04:16:09","slug":"ebola-may-have-been-spreading-unchecked-since-january-aid-groups-fear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/616408\/","title":{"rendered":"Ebola may have been spreading unchecked since January, aid groups fear"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) had previously said they believed the index case was a healthcare worker in Bunia, who developed symptoms of Ebola on April 25 and later died.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The detection lag would have serious implications for health teams trying to contain the spread of the Bundibugyo species, <a class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/global-health\/science-and-disease\/ebola-virus-drc-outbreak-symptoms-transmission-treatment\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which currently has no licenced vaccines or treatments<\/a> and is proving notoriously difficult to control.<\/p>\n<p>Only 20 per cent of people known to have close contact with Ebola patients in the DRC have been traced, with thousands still unaccounted for.<\/p>\n<p>If the outbreak started in January, many thousands more potential contacts would have been exposed.<\/p>\n<p>Containment efforts have been further complicated by a combination of <a class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/global-health\/science-and-disease\/ebola-doctors-battle-conspiracies-and-misinformation-drc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conspiracy theories, mistrust<\/a>, and a volatile security situation that has fuelled a significant wave of violence against healthcare workers and facilities treating infected people.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, a treatment centre in Rwampara run by MSF was attacked by a group of people in an attempt to <a class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/global-health\/science-and-disease\/protesters-storm-ebola-hospital-to-retrieve-victims-body\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retrieve the bodies of their relatives<\/a> who had died of Ebola.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe true scale of this Ebola outbreak is likely far worse than official figures suggest,\u201d Rachel Howard, Senior Technical Emergency Health Advisor at the IRC, said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen four out of five contacts are not being traced, it becomes incredibly difficult to contain the outbreak or even understand its true scale.
