In response, more people pursued advanced degrees hoping to gain an edge in the market, but for many, that hasn\u2019t materialized. At the same time, major workforce cuts in sectors like the federal government have added even more candidates to an already crowded field.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpr8fvj900023b6rd2qbvo66@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen we look at that payroll number \u2026 that is just not reflecting what most people\u2019s experience in the labor market today is,\u201d said Kory Kantenga, head of economics at LinkedIn, referring to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/08\/economy\/us-jobs-report-april\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April jobs report<\/a>, which indicated employers added 115,000 new jobs that month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmprf5b3r00003b6rmoz57q5p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s what\u2019s going on.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoco8ik00073b6rr6qy8ncq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In April, half of the new jobs created came from healthcare, while the other half came from retail, and transportation and warehousing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpr91h6p00093b6rr03xp9aj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, \u201cmost people are not looking for jobs as couriers and messengers,\u201d Kantenga told CNN. And even if that were the case, he said it\u2019s unreasonable to expect the pace of job creation on the retail and transportation and warehousing side to be long-lasting, since many roles in those fields are more vulnerable to automation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpr99lz0000b3b6r509f1any@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The healthcare sector has remained robust since demand for workers keeps rising as the population ages \u2014 and also because many services can\u2019t easily be automated.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoehiuy000d3b6r2b8brvxs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In other sectors, however, competition has widened while the pool of new postings has not.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpoenfdj000f3b6rsor8u5d2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sophie Duryee, a political economy major who graduated from UC Berkeley last year, dreamed of working in the public sector, ideally in a regulatory compliance role.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpogtvmq00003b6rz4wpudba@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But that\u2019s been an uphill battle. Since reaching peak levels in 2024, federal employment is down by nearly 350,000 as of April, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Some AI tools can even handle the application process from start to finish \u2014 and potentially overwhelm hiring systems.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmppy1xct00053b6r7fs9pbas@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Saul Chavez, who is in his mid-40s, was laid off from a role as a project manager at a media company in September and has had only a handful of interviews at media companies since then. In the meantime, he has been working two simultaneous part-time jobs in public education programs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmprgksie000o3b6rngir5i1i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Job hunting can be harder for those who are mid-career or older, since \u201cthey may be more out of practice as they\u2019re generally settled into their career for longer,\u201d Lauren Thomas, an economist at payroll and HR company Deel, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpreel39000c3b6r1oqmqb4r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s backed up by the data: Four years ago, laid-off workers 45 to 54 years old were unemployed for an average of 27.1 weeks, compared to the current average of 30.7 weeks, according to the BLS. On top of that, hiring demand has slowed in professions that typically attract advanced-degree holders, such as tech and finance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmprf1jsg000k3b6rmclg5bnv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/31\/business\/ai-jobs-big-tech\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Several large employers<\/a> in those sectors, including Amazon and Block, have cited increased productivity stemming from AI as reasons for recent cuts.
