The challenge, which began spreading on social media years ago, continues to harm children who are encouraged to take dangerous amounts of the over-the-counter allergy medication in an attempt to induce hallucinations. <\/p>\n
At least five kids were sent to Rady Children\u2019s Hospital in San Diego, California<\/a>, in late May after attempting the Benadryl challenge, according to local outlet KUSI<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cSo we\u2019re seeing a lot of 16 to 18 year olds, also young adults, 20 to 22,\u201d Dr. Shahfar Khan, a pediatrician at the hospital, told KUSI.<\/p>\n Khan explained the serious health impact <\/a>that the challenge can have on a person, including symptoms that could lead to cardiac arrest<\/a>. <\/p>\n \u201cWhen you\u2019re really taking it in large quantities, it can have an effect on various systems of the body,\u201d Khan said. <\/p>\n \u201cIt can cause agitation, hallucinations, a very fast heart rate that could lead to cardiac arrest. Seizures we see often with the Benadryl ingestion as well.\u201d<\/p>\n None of the five kids had to be admitted for ongoing care, according to the hospital. <\/p>\n Kenvue, the makers of Benadryl, acknowledged in a statement to The Independent that the challenge is \u201cdangerous\u201d and \u201cshould be stopped immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n A 13-year-old boy from Columbus, Ohio<\/a>, died from an overdose in 2023 after attempting the Benadryl challenge. <\/p>\n Jacob Stevens’ family spoke out after his death to bring awareness to the dangers of the challenge.<\/p>\n “It was too much for his body,” Jacob\u2019s father, Justin Stevens, told local outlet WSYX <\/a>at the time.<\/p>\n Jacob was on a ventilator for six days before he died. Justin called it \u201cthe worst day of his life.”<\/p>\n \u201cKeep an eye on what your kid\u2019s doing with that phone,\u201d Jacob\u2019s family said in a plea to parents. \u201cTalk to them about the situation.
