Asked if there had been others lost as a result of disappearing messages \u2013 Mandelson declined to pass on information from his phone \u2013 the spokesperson said only that Starmer had provided all the information required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe prime minister has fully complied with the humble address by providing all the information he holds as required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cYou have seen messages from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/peter-mandelson\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Mandelson<\/a> to the PM in this tranche, that is alongside multiple references via the prime minister\u2019s private office, which is the standard and established route for communicating prime ministerial decisions and handling correspondence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/non-corporate-communication-channels-for-government-business\/using-non-corporate-communication-channels-eg-whatsapp-private-email-sms-for-government-business-html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cabinet Office guidance on messaging systems<\/a> such as WhatsApp, states that disappearing messages, which vanish after a period of time set by the user, \u201chave a role in limiting the buildup of messages on devices\u201d and can therefore be used.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cYou must ensure that any such use does not impact on your record-keeping or transparency responsibilities,\u201d the guidance continues. Under wider rules for ministers and officials, this involves screenshotting or otherwise recording messages relevant to policy or decisions, but not other content, for example gossip.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"What\u2019s missing from \u2018embarrassing\u2019 Mandelson files? \u2013 The Latest\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780465510_498_1920.jpg\" height=\"259\" width=\"460\" class=\"dcr-1qi2at0\"\/>What\u2019s missing from \u2018embarrassing\u2019 Mandelson files? \u2013 The Latest<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The government previously announced a review into how the rules for preserving messages operate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Starmer and Mandelson are not close, and the limited WhatsApp messages shown in the released files show generally formal exchanges, so it is possible that not much material is missing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But the Conservatives said the revelation about disappearing messages was alarming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Alex Burghart, the shadow chancellor of the duchy of Lancaster, said: \u201cGovernment guidance is clear: significant information and decisions must be properly recorded and preserved. But Keir Starmer\u2019s messages to Peter Mandelson have been disappeared or destroyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe Conservatives have forced the government to hand over hundreds of documents that show just how shoddy Starmer\u2019s government is.
