{"id":618506,"date":"2026-06-03T07:42:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T07:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/618506\/"},"modified":"2026-06-03T07:42:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T07:42:08","slug":"uk-media-groups-given-power-to-opt-out-of-google-ai-search-summaries-competition-and-markets-authority","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/618506\/","title":{"rendered":"UK media groups given power to opt out of Google AI search summaries | Competition and Markets Authority"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Publishers will be able to opt out of their content being used to train Google\u2019s AI models and power its search summaries, the UK competition watchdog has announced as it imposes new conduct requirements on search services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cPublishers will now have effective tools to prevent their content being used to power AI features in search, such as AI Overviews,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/competition-commission\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Competition and Markets Authority<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis will put publishers, like news organisations, in a stronger position to negotiate content deals with Google.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cTo boost consumer trust, Google is also now required to make sure that publisher content is properly attributed, using clear links, in AI\u2011generated search results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The CMA said the requirement was imposed after its decision <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2025\/oct\/10\/google-given-special-status-by-watchdog-that-could-force-it-to-change-uk-search\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to designate Google with strategic market status<\/a> in general search services. It first proposed the idea of an AI search summary opt-out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2026\/jan\/28\/uk-media-groups-should-be-allowed-opt-out-of-google-ai-overviews-cma-proposals\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in January<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe designation allows the CMA to introduce targeted rules, known as \u2018conduct requirements\u2019, for Google\u2019s search activities if proportionate for the purposes of ensuring fair dealing, open choices or trust and transparency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cGoogle will now also have to allow publishers to opt out of allowing their content to be used for the \u2018fine-tuning\u2019 of AI models.
