a figure that must be cut to 287kg by 2042.

She said: “The way we deal with waste across the country is changing and we must prepare for how we will meet challenging national targets set by the government.

“Putting it simply, we need to double the amount we recycle and cut by half the amount we throw away and this cannot be achieved by doing nothing and staying as we are.

“We know we face a challenge, our recycling rates are low and the amount of waste produced in the borough is high but with modernised services, clear information and the right support provided to our residents, we can and will improve.

“We are working hard to deliver opportunities for residents to recycle more from home and at recycling sites while we wait for the county council to deliver a new sorting facility.

“In the meantime, we know over a third of what goes into our rubbish bins at home can currently be recycled and we will support residents to manage their waste differently to maximise the use of their green bins, glass boxes and food waste caddies.”

 Green recycling bin (Image: Stock)

The council says it will be stepping up communication to explain exactly what can and cannot be placed in the new plastic banks, as well as reminding residents what already goes in green recycling bins and glass boxes.

It is also warning that putting the wrong items in recycling – known as contamination – can mean whole loads have to be treated as rubbish instead.

The new plastic banks sit alongside other measures in the draft strategy, including the introduction of weekly food waste collections last October and plans to explore a kerbside collection for small electrical items.

Changes to bin collection frequencies, with grey bins moving to fortnightly collections from October this year, are also proposed as part of efforts to boost recycling rates.

Cabinet is due to debate the recycling and waste strategy, including the new plastic banks, at its meeting on Tuesday, June 9.

As part of its draft recycling and waste strategy, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is introducing temporary new…

[22
1397,90,56,54,55
post-619565","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-environment","tag-environment","tag-science","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
