{"id":620055,"date":"2026-06-04T03:31:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T03:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/620055\/"},"modified":"2026-06-04T03:31:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T03:31:10","slug":"police-to-use-ai-facial-recognition-at-appleby-horse-fair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/620055\/","title":{"rendered":"Police to use AI facial recognition at Appleby Horse Fair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government has moved to <a class=\"ck-custom-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2025\/12\/04\/face-recognition-cameras-interfere-human-rights-home-office\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expand the use of the software<\/a>, which Sarah Jones, the policing minister, previously called the \u201cthe biggest breakthrough for catching criminals since DNA matching\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, civil rights groups have opposed the plans, warning that the expansion would enable \u201chistoric breaches of Britons\u2019 privacy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Det Supt Dan St Quintin, gold commander for the fair, said: \u201cThe Live Facial Recognition technology will help us to identify the minority who are either intent on causing trouble or here to commit crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we have spotted the potential troublemakers, we will have our officers on the ground able to approach the individual, take them to one side, and speak with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fair is expected to take place this year from June 4 to June 10.
