Sony has begun issuing a new PS5 system software update, and it’s apparently rolling out in a phased release.<\/p>\n

I can say it’s at least available in the UK now, as I’m downloading it as I write this.<\/p>\n

The new firmware update takes PS5 to version 26.04-13.40.00, and it weighs in at just over 1.2 GB.<\/p>\n

What does it do, then?<\/p>\n

Here are the official patch notes<\/a> (drum roll please):<\/p>\n

We’ve improved system software performance and stability.<\/p>\n

Ta-da!<\/p>\n

It’s always a fun day when you get a minor patch for your PS5. I’m gonna need to buy a new pack of party poppers soon.<\/p>\n

But seriously, this doesn’t appear to do anything front-facing \u2014 it’s probably a security update to prevent people hacking the console, or maybe it’s laying the groundwork for more exciting updates, like the impending UI upgrade.<\/p>\n

I don’t know when exactly that’s supposed to arrive, but we’ve already seen images of what the new home menu looks like, so presumably it’s not far off at this point.<\/p>\n

I’ll update the article if and when any secret new bits and bobs are discovered.<\/p>\n
