He spent 37 years at CBS News, saying in a statement that he leaves with \u201ca heart brimming with gratitude.\u201d<\/p>\n He was sent a termination letter by 60 Minutes\u2019 new executive producer, Nick Bilton, whom the journalist said had \u201cslender\u201d qualifications for the job.<\/p>\n In a note that Bilton sent to Pelley alongside his formal termination letter, which circulated on social media<\/a> Tuesday night, the new 60 Minutes chief said Pelley had set up an \u201cambush.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYesterday, you hijacked my first meeting with staff to disparage me, my qualifications, and my intentions with remarkable incivility and contempt,\u201d Bilton wrote in the note.<\/p>\n Bilton had tried to reassure 60 Minutes staff at Monday\u2019s meeting that the program \u201cis going to stay exactly like it is for now,\u201d and that \u201cBari loves this institution,\u201d according to The New York Times<\/a>, which obtained an audio recording of the tense exchange.<\/p>\n \u201cShe is murdering 60 Minutes. She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it, and she\u2019s been doing exactly that,\u201d Pelley reportedly fired back.<\/p>\n \u201cShe has no qualifications for her job; you have slender qualifications for this job,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n The CBS News boss has faced scrutiny since being appointed, particularly over her decision to pull a 60 Minutes segment<\/a> about Venezuelan migrants sent by the Trump administration to CECOT, an El Salvadoran prison accused of having inhumane conditions.
