UK doctors and nurses have been told to check they have sufficient stocks of PPE and be prepared to isolate patients as part of an NHS-wide national alert for Ebola<\/a>, it has emerged.<\/p>\n

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued an \u201curgent public health message\u201d to all hospitals, GP surgeries and other NHS clinics advising staff to be on alert for any suspected cases of the deadly virus, amid the outbreak in central Africa.<\/p>\n

While the threat to the general public in Britain is classed as low, and there are no recorded British cases in the current outbreak, the message<\/a> tells NHS staff to make preparations in the event of a patient displaying symptoms.<\/p>\n

The Bundibugyo variant of Ebola has caused hundreds of cases and 62 confirmed deaths in Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.<\/p>\n

As Elon Musk\u2019s rocket and satellite company prepares to debut on the stock exchange, the world\u2019s richest man could pass another milestone with SpaceX\u2019s eye-watering valuation.<\/p>\n

As the company prepares to go public, it is offering<\/p>\n

A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was shot with a crossbow at the University of Surrey.<\/p>\n

Charges after violent protest<\/p>\n

Police were pelted with missiles during the disorder on Tuesday evening near the home of Mr Nowak\u2019s killer, Vickrum Digwa, in Southampton. Matt Styler, 50, of Gosport, has been charged with assault by beating of an emergency worker. Daniel Frost, 44, of Southampton, has been charged with violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon.<\/p>\n

Attacker jailed <\/p>\n

Digwa, 23, was jailed on Monday for a minimum of 21 years, after a jury convicted him of the murder of Mr Nowak.<\/p>\n

Digwa stabbed the teenager five times using a 21cm blade he was allowed to carry as part of his Sikh faith.<\/p>\n

He then lied to officers at the scene, claiming that he had been the victim of a racist attack.<\/p>\n

Bodycam footage shows officers handcuffing and arresting Mr Nowak, who said he had been stabbed. He died at the scene.<\/p>\n

The UKHSA has already put up posters at major airports and train stations for passengers returning from DRC and Uganda, advising them to seek medical advice if they have symptoms.<\/p>\n

It routinely issues urgent public health messages in response to emerging infectious disease threats, with the last one broadcast during the deadly meningitis B outbreak in Kent.<\/p>\n

Medical staff have been told to be alert to any patients who in the previous 21 days have returned from DRC or Uganda and are showing symptoms such as a fever, unexplained haemorrhage or multi-organ failure.<\/p>\n

If a person is suspected to have symptoms, NHS staff should \u201cmove the patient immediately to an empty room. The number of staff in contact with the patient should be restricted and relatives and visitors must not enter the room,\u201d the alert says.<\/p>\n

It adds: \u201cEnsure relevant teams within your organisation are aware of the information in this urgent public health message (UPHM).<\/p>\n

\u201cThis particularly applies to microbiology, virology or infectious disease teams but also infection prevention and control (IPC), urgent care, emergency departments, acute medicine, obstetrics, paediatrics and primary care [GP surgeries].\u201d<\/p>\n

Staff should \u201censure clinical services have pathways in place for assessment and management of suspected EBOD [Ebola disease] cases within their setting\u201d, and infection and prevention teams should ensure they have \u201cadequate stocks of personal protective equipment (PPE) and that relevant staff are trained in its use for the assessment and treatment of suspected EBOD cases\u201d.<\/p>\n

Staff should report any suspected cases to their local UKHSA department.<\/p>\n

The World Health Organisation designated the current Ebola outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern on 17 May.<\/p>\n

In 2014, during the last major Ebola outbreak in West Africa<\/a>, a nurse returning to Glasgow from Sierra Leone was treated for the disease. A further three healthcare workers, who also had been returning to the UK from the centre of the outbreak, were treated at London\u2019s Royal Free Hospital.<\/p>\n

Unlike Covid, Ebola is not transmitted through airborne particles but by direct contact with blood, secretions or other body fluids from an infected person, or contaminated environments or materials.<\/p>\n

Symptoms include fever, malaise, myalgia [muscle pain], and headaches, but some patients may not have a fever when they present, the alert says.<\/p>\n

These symptoms may progress to include rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, subsequent multi-organ failure, neurological symptoms and death.<\/p>\n

The UKHSA said it continued to monitor and assess the situation closely. It said the probability of an imported case and the impact of such a case on the UK population was low, and because the virus is not airborne, transmission in a community setting is \u201cextremely unlikely\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, public health experts have warned that the UK\u2019s decision to cut spending on the Pandemic Fund, operated by the World Bank and WHO, is hampering the response to outbreaks such as Ebola.<\/p>\n

Doctors from campaign group Healthy World, Secure Britain said the UK had committed less than 5 per cent, or \u00a320m, of what it had previously spent to tackle outbreaks of Ebola. In November 2015 alone, Government documents confirmed Britain had spent \u00a3427m to tackle Ebola and early recovery.<\/p>\n

The World Health Organisation estimates that a vaccine against the Bundibugyo variant of Ebola may take six to nine months to develop.<\/p>\n

Kirsty Le Doare, professor of vaccinology and immunology at City St George\u2019s, University of London, and member of Healthy World, Secure Britain, campaign, said: \u201cHelicoptering in and out of a country when an outbreak happens won\u2019t work.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UK must lead by accompanying surveillance with funding, infrastructure and laboratory capacity. This will provide a pipeline for current vaccine technology that can be upscaled for future pandemics \u2013 one that may affect the UK in the way Covid-19 did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Derek Sloan, an expert in infectious diseases at St Andrews University and UK-Med, said: \u201cThis outbreak, along with the recent Hantavirus cases on a cruise ship and meningococcal meningitis infections in the UK, shows how important it is that we stay vigilant and use effective public health tools to protect our populations.<\/p>\n

\u201cInfectious disease outbreaks such as these in our interconnected world cannot be dismissed as someone else\u2019s problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

What is the risk of an Ebola outbreak in the UK?<\/p>\n

After the global Covid pandemic and other concerning outbreaks, such as M-pox (formerly monkeypox) and hantavirus, it is understandable if people are nervous about Ebola, currently rampaging in Africa.<\/p>\n

The virus kills by causing internal and external bleeding and has up to a 50 per cent fatality rate.<\/p>\n

Now, NHS staff have all been warned they may need to isolate Ebola patients if any arrive. Healthcare staff would also implement strict infection control precautions, including the use of PPE.<\/p>\n

But the risks of a major outbreak taking off in the UK is extremely low. Ebola is not in the same transmissibility league as Covid, which spread through the air, often from people before they got sick.<\/p>\n

Ebola mainly spreads through blood and other body fluids when people are already sick \u2013 and so can be stopped by fairly basic precautions, like making sure no body fluids touch the skin.<\/p>\n

The virus has been spreading in Democratic Republic of Congo. Traditional funeral practices in the country, where relatives wash bodies and so come into contact with blood, can amplify the spread.<\/p>\n
