{"id":621653,"date":"2026-06-05T00:03:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T00:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/621653\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T00:03:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T00:03:08","slug":"more-than-100-artists-threaten-legal-action-against-venice-biennale-the-art-newspaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/621653\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 100 artists threaten legal action against Venice Biennale &#8211; The Art Newspaper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">More than 100 artists participating in the Venice Biennale have accused organisers of ignoring repeated requests to remove them from visitor-voted awards and have threatened legal action over the dispute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">In a statement posted on <a class=\"transition-colors duration-default shadow-externalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.e-flux.com\/notes\/6783504\/artists-call-out-venice-biennale-for-disregarding-their-repeated-requests-to-be-withdrawn-from-visitors-lions-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">e-flux<\/a> on 3 June, artists from the Biennale&#8217;s In Minor Keys exhibition and various national pavilions said they were disappointed that the Biennale had failed to act on their requests to withdraw them from the Visitors&#8217; Lions awards. Signatories include Walid Raad, Laurie Anderson and Pio Abad, among many other artists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201cWe view this lack of responsiveness as not only highly disrespectful of the undersigned participants in the Biennale, but also of the audience,\u201d the group wrote, adding that it was \u201cunfair\u201d to ask the public to participate in a process that \u201chas lacked transparency and accountability\u201d and \u201ca waste of their time to ask them to cast votes that cannot be counted\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The signatories said they would \u201cbegin next steps towards legal action\u201d, without elaborating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The statement reproduces a 20 May letter sent by the group to the Biennale, in which the artists expressed their \u201cshock\u201d at finding their names still listed despite earlier requests to be withdrawn. The letter demanded that their names be removed from \u201cany and all contexts involving the Visitors&#8217; Lions awards\u201d and that any votes cast for them be disqualified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">\u201dWe request confirmation in writing, as you have done in previous communications, that you have received this letter and that you will immediately accommodate this change to your website,\u201d the artists wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">In a statement to The Art Newspaper, the Biennale said it had replied to the artists on 28 May. The response, which the Biennale provided in full, stated that the artists would remain listed in the awards process in order to \u201cguarantee all visitors their freedom of expression\u201d, but that votes cast for signatories requesting withdrawal would not be counted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">&#8220;No response to this letter was received so far,&#8221; the Biennale&#8217;s statement added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">The dispute stems from the <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2026\/04\/30\/venice-biennale-2026-jury-resigns-russia-israel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resignation<\/a> of the Biennale&#8217;s five-member jury on 30 April following controversy over the participation of Israel and Russia. Before stepping down, the jury had announced that it would not consider artists from countries whose leaders were subject to arrest warrants for crimes against humanity, a position widely seen as applying to Israel and Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pt-dp-p font-text-light font-light text-lg leading-normal tracking-wide mb-base last:mb-0\" itemprop=\"text\">Following the jury&#8217;s resignation, the Biennale announced that, in its absence, two Golden Lions would be decided by public vote. On 9 May, the Biennale&#8217;s first public day, nearly 70 artists <a class=\"transition-all duration-default shadow-internalLink hover:text-red-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2026\/05\/11\/more-than-70-venice-biennale-artists-withdraw-from-awards\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that they were withdrawing from consideration. The number of signatories has since risen to 106.
