A man in his 50s is in a serious condition in hospital after being shot with a crossbow at a University of Surrey accommodation site. <\/p>\n
Surrey Police said a 21-year-old Saudi national – a former student at the university – has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody. <\/p>\n
Officers were called to Manor Park Student Village, Guildford, at around 10am on Thursday. <\/p>\n
The University of Surrey said a member of its campus safety team was seriously injured in the incident.<\/p>\n
Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen, of Surrey Police, said the suspect was detained shortly after the incident. <\/p>\n
A “significant emergency services presence” remains in place, and access to the Royal Surrey County Hospital is unaffected, the force added. <\/p>\n
In a statement, Ch Supt Jon Groenen said: \u201cI appreciate that this incident will cause concern amongst our local communities, and I can reassure that we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident. We are working closely with the university as our investigation progresses.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe suspect was detained at the scene shortly after the incident and an investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances of the assault.”<\/p>\n
He added that the victim’s next of kin has been informed and is being supported by officers. <\/p>\n
