Within our own Milky Way galaxy, two bright, spiky stars stand
\nlike sentinels<\/a>
\nin the foreground of
\nthis cosmic snapshot<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Far beyond them are the galaxies of
\nthe Hydra Cluster<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In fact, while the spiky foreground stars are hundreds of light-years
\ndistant, the Hydra Cluster
\ngalaxies are well over 100 million light-years away.<\/p>\n

Three large galaxies near the cluster center, two yellow
\nellipticals<\/a>
\n(NGC 3311, NGC 3309) and one prominent blue spiral (NGC 3312),
\nare the dominant galaxies, each about 150,000 light-years in diameter.<\/p>\n

An intriguing overlapping galaxy pair cataloged as
\nNGC 3314 lies<\/a>
\nabove and left of NGC 3312.<\/p>\n

Also known as Abell 1060, the Hydra galaxy cluster is one of three large
\ngalaxy clusters within 200 million light-years of the Milky Way.<\/p>\n

In the
\nnearby universe<\/a>,
\ngalaxies are gravitationally bound into clusters which themselves are
\nloosely bound
\ninto superclusters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Superclusters in turn are seen to align over even larger
\nscales<\/a>.<\/p>\n
