Momentum is growing among Labour MPs secretly plotting a push for the triple lock to be scrapped <\/a>in order to boost support for younger generations.<\/p>\n

Pressure is mounting from outside Whitehall to rethink the policy, with former prime minister Tony Blair warning it is \u201cunaffordable long term\u201d, and former Conservative chancellor Jeremy Hunt<\/a> calling for the \u201cimmoral\u201d policy to be scrapped.<\/p>\n

Despite the Labour Government stating it will maintain the triple lock in its manifesto, MPs have told The i Paper of a groundswell of private discussions among colleagues about how to phase it out \u2013 while causing minimal electoral damage.<\/p>\n

Buffy The Vampire Slayer star Anthony Head dies at 72<\/p>\n

Actor Anthony Head, best known for his roles in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Ted Lasso, has died at the age of 72, his daughters said in a statement. <\/p>\n

The British star was best known as librarian Rupert Giles in the cult US supernatural TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, which ran from 1997 to 2003.<\/p>\n

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our extraordinary father. He passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family. Malkinson, now aged 60, had made multiple failed appeals and was only released in 2020, with his conviction finally quashed by the Court of Appeal in 2023.<\/p>\n

How he was caught<\/p>\n

Quinn, 52, and a father of six, was aged 29 at the time of the rape but a sex offender from the age of 12. <\/p>\n

He was only arrested almost two decades after the attack, after advances in DNA testing meant that in 2022, a billion-to-one match of his DNA profile was made with saliva left on the victim\u2019s vest top.<\/p>\n

Victoria Derbyshire has received a \u201creprimand\u201d from BBC bosses after an investigation over bullying allegations at Newsnight, it has been reported.<\/p>\n

And on BBC\u2019s Question Time, this week, Burnham suggested he was open to cutting tax by raising the income tax personal allowance, which currently sits at \u00a312,570.<\/p>\n

Police went to a north-west LA home on Wednesday morning after an emergency 911 call.<\/p>\n

Officers responded to a report of \u201cunknown trouble\u201d after a caller told police: \u201cI am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officers found Handy stabbed in the chest and unconscious in a front garden.<\/p>\n

The 81-year-old actor, credited in several popular films and TV dramas, was taken to hospital and later pronounced dead.<\/p>\n

Arrest made<\/p>\n

Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy\u2019s girlfriend, was arrested and accused of the murder.<\/p>\n

The 44-year-old, who lives at the property in Tarzana with his mother, told officers he was \u201cthe one they were looking for,\u201d police said.<\/p>\n

Gledhill\u2019s bail was set at $2m (\u00a31.5m) and he remained in custody as of Thursday night.<\/p>\n

Fresh controversy<\/p>\n

Amid controversy surrounding the disgraced former duke\u2019s lease of the Crown Estate home, the National Audit Office has published a report into the Royal Family\u2019s residential property arrangements. Under the arrangement, he did not have to return any money to the Crown Estate, an independent commercial operation which returns its profits to the Treasury for the benefit of taxpayers.<\/p>\n

The generous uprating system was introduced in 2010 to reduce poverty in older generations, and guarantees that the state pension increases each year with either inflation, wage increases or 2.5 per cent \u2013 whichever is highest.<\/p>\n

High levels of inflation have seen costs balloon to around \u00a3146bn a year, which is equivalent to 5 per cent of GDP and more than double the amount spent on defence.<\/p>\n

According to the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), the triple lock has cost around three times more than initial expectations and will add around 1.6 per cent of GDP to the state pension bill over the next 50 years, accounting for about half of the projected overall rise in pension spending.<\/p>\n

While there have long been murmurings from within Labour that the triple lock is unaffordable and unsustainable, many believe scrapping it would be politically toxic among older voters.<\/p>\n

But now, growing numbers of MPs are calling for the party to position itself as a voice for younger generations, who have suffered several crises from the 2008 financial crash through to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u2018This should be framed towards young people\u2019 <\/p>\n

Labour backbencher Graeme Downie said older people should \u201ccontinue to be supported\u201d, but that his party must be \u201cunashamed about saying we are about the next generation\u201d.<\/p>\n

He told The i Paper: \u201cThe triple lock costs tens of billions of pounds more than it was expected to cost, yet we still have pensioners living in poverty, which tells you that the current system isn\u2019t working, and it\u2019s costing too much money.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy not come up with a way that both supports pensioners in poverty, but also uses that money more effectively to shift to things like defence spending, and also to support the next generation as well?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing should be off the table, frankly, for the kind of generational shift that we need to see,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Downie said that while he may be one of the only Labour MPs speaking out, dozens more agree with him privately. After calling for triple lock reform in The House<\/a> \u2013 Parliament\u2019s magazine \u2013 in April, he said \u201cat least 20 colleagues\u201d said they agreed with him.<\/p>\n

The MP for Dunfermline and Dollar added that if abolishing the policy is framed as a way of supporting younger generations, there would be \u201ca huge amount of support\u201d in the parliamentary Labour Party.<\/p>\n

Even pensions minister Torsten Bell \u2013 who has publicly committed to maintaining the triple lock for the rest of this Parliament \u2013 described the triple lock as \u201csilly\u201d<\/a> while in opposition.<\/p>\n

Some MPs are hopeful a Labour leadership contest could spark a more prominent debate about the future of the triple lock.<\/p>\n

However, leadership hopeful and former health secretary Wes Streeting has previously defended the policy as \u201cguaranteed\u201d for pensioners. His potential rival and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham \u2013 who is bidding to return to Westminster in this month\u2019s by-election \u2013 has not publicly broken with the party\u2019s stance on keeping the policy during the current Parliament.<\/p>\n

MPs starting to go public<\/p>\n

Despite the sizeable hurdles in the way of MPs campaigning for the end of the triple lock, their cause was bolstered this week as former Cabinet minister Liam Byrne became the most prominent serving Labour MP to publicly admit that it should be scrapped<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Byrne, who famously left a note for his successor to say there was \u201cno money\u201d left when his party lost power in 2010, argued for \u201ca gradual move from the triple lock\u2019s ratchet effect toward a more stable uprating mechanism\u201d in an essay for centre-right think-tank Bright Blue.<\/p>\n

Labour\u2019s former deputy leader, Harriet Harman, suggested in April that the Government should look at means-testing the state pension triple lock in order to raise more money for defence.<\/p>\n

Labour Growth Group (LGG), a centrist group of MPs focused on economic growth, which was formed after Labour\u2019s landslide victory, said the triple lock \u201csits in a fiscal space\u201d that MPs feel could be better used to support working-age people.<\/p>\n

Mark McVitie, the outgoing director of the group, said there is a \u201csubset of MPs focused on intergenerational fairness\u201d, who feel that the \u201cpeople who worked hard deserve security, and the people working now are getting clobbered on energy, on rent, on everything\u201d.<\/p>\n

He told The i Paper there must be a \u201cshared project to fix that\u201d by demonstrating how to \u201cbring down the structural cost base across the economy\u201d, rather than a move to abolish the triple lock as a \u201cstand-alone measure\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cTry to do it without those major accompanying reforms and it fails, politically and morally,\u201d McVitie added.<\/p>\n

Labour MP Chris Curtis, who recently quit as LGG\u2019s chair, said last November that the triple lock \u201ccannot last forever\u201d as a \u201cmathematical fact\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018We need to future-proof the system\u2019<\/p>\n

Blair said the generosity of the triple lock was \u201cnot affordable\u201d in the long term, while the Resolution Foundation \u2013 where Bell previously worked as chief executive \u2013 has suggested ministers \u201ccall time\u201d on the system.<\/p>\n

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) has also published extensively on the need to \u201creconsider the triple lock\u201d, proposing other options for uprating pensioners\u2019 pay in a more stable way.<\/p>\n

Heidi Karjalainen, a senior economist at the IFS, said the Government\u2019s Pensions Commission, launched in 2025, is trying to build consensus on the future of the state pension.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cWhat we really need is to take the politics out of these choices, to the extent that it\u2019s possible, and we want to think about the pension system as a whole, and then try to future-proof it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hunt recently told the BBC that the triple lock is \u201cnot just unaffordable but actually immoral\u201d as it is being partly funded by debt on younger generations.<\/p>\n

Several other former Conservative ministers have criticised the policy for being geared towards ageing demographics, including shadow Chancellor Mel Stride and MP and former Cabinet minister Tom Tugendhat.<\/p>\n

But former pensions minister Steve Webb said that although ministers would \u201clove to\u201d ditch it to free up extra money, it is politically risky.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are perfectly good fairness arguments, and we should do more for young people,\u201d he said. \u201cBut from a crude electoral perspective, there aren\u2019t many votes in taking money away from pensions and spending on young people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Webb added that there is a \u201cgood reason for keeping it going\u201d with three-quarters of workers now unable to look forward to a \u201cmoderate retirement\u201d, according to a new report by Pensions UK.<\/p>\n
