Some medications can add to fatigue. Others can have more serious symptoms, like worsening troubles with swallowing or breathing.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to tell every healthcare provider you see that you have MG \u2014 especially before starting a new medication or having surgery.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">\u201cYou want providers to know about your condition so they can choose medication accordingly,\u201d Dr. Dib states. \u201cWe recommend that people with myasthenia gravis carry a medical ID card or wear a medical alert bracelet. That way, even in an emergency, they can get the treatment that\u2019s safest for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Medications that may worsen myasthenia gravis<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">Some people will tolerate certain medications well, while others may find they worsen their symptoms.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">Still, Dr. Dib says there are several medication categories that deserve extra caution. She shares some common ones.<\/p>\n<p>Magnesium<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \"><a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/magnesium\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Magnesium<\/a> is often a big concern for people with MG.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">\u201cMagnesium can worsen myasthenia and exacerbate symptoms by working on the neuromuscular junction,\u201d Dr. Dib explains. In other words, high doses of magnesium can exacerbate the already-troubled communication between your nerves and muscles.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">The biggest offender is intravenous (IV) magnesium. It\u2019s sometimes used in hospitals for conditions like preeclampsia, heart rhythm issues or severe magnesium deficiency.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">Some people may tolerate over-the-counter magnesium supplements in small doses. But Dr. Dib advises avoiding them unless your healthcare provider specifically recommends them, especially if your myasthenia symptoms aren\u2019t well managed.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">She adds that magnesium may hide in over-the-counter products, like:<\/p>\n<p>LaxativesAntacidsMultivitamins and other combined supplements<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">Unless your provider says otherwise, you shouldn\u2019t need to worry about magnesium naturally found in <a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/foods-that-are-high-in-magnesium\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">foods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">\u201cYou\u2019re unlikely to eat so much magnesium-rich foods that it affects your condition,\u201d Dr. Dib clarifies. \u201cBut it\u2019s certainly easy to get too much when you take supplements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Antibiotics<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">Certain <a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/16386-antibiotics\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">antibiotics<\/a> are known for worsening MG symptoms. They include:<\/p>\n<p>Fluoroquinolones, like ciprofloxacin (Cipro\u00ae), which is often used for urinary tract infections and respiratory issuesMacrolides, like azithromycin (Z-Pak\u00ae), commonly prescribed for respiratory infectionsAminoglycosides, like gentamicin, which is typically used for more serious bacterial infections, like sepsis and meningitis<a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/penicillin\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Penicillin<\/a> can be used to treat a range of bacterial infections, including strep throat, ear infections and more<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">If you have an infection that needs antibiotics, your provider may recommend other ones if they\u2019re likely to do the trick. But sometimes, even the antibiotics that aren\u2019t necessarily recommended for myasthenia gravis are still your best treatment option.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">\u201cIf the medication is needed, especially for infections, we manage the myasthenia symptoms while treating the infection,\u201d Dr. Dib explains.<\/p>\n<p>Beta-blockers and calcium channel blockers<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \"><a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/22318-beta-blockers\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Beta-blockers<\/a> and <a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/22316-calcium-channel-blockers\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">calcium channel blockers<\/a> are medications used to treat high blood pressure and heart rhythm conditions. And lots of people, including people with myasthenia gravis, need them to help manage their heart health.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">In those cases, your provider will work with you to treat your heart while balancing risks carefully.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">\u201cThere are ways to lower the impact on MG symptoms,\u201d Dr. Dib says. \u201cIf they\u2019re needed, we can adjust your MG treatment and monitor symptoms closely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Statins<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \"><a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/22282-statins\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Statins<\/a> are medications used to lower cholesterol. They can worsen, or even cause, MG symptoms.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">\u201cVery rarely, statins can either trigger myasthenia gravis, or people can get myasthenia symptoms for the first time from statins,\u201d Dr. Dib says.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">But if you need statins, there are ways to lower the risk. Providers may recommend:<\/p>\n<p>Starting with a lower doseCombining lower-dose statins with other cholesterol medicationsMonitoring symptoms carefullyBotox<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">Botulinum toxin injections (<a data-identity=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/8312-botulinum-toxin-injections\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brandBlue-500 print:text-black underline underline-offset-[5px] print:no-underline decoration-1 break-words hover:text-blue-800 transition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Botox\u00ae<\/a>) can be risky for people with MG.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">\u201cWe definitely recommend avoiding Botox because it\u2019s a neuromuscular blocker,\u201d Dr. Dib explains. That means Botox blocks nerve signals to your muscles. In people with MG, this can significantly worsen weakness and other symptoms.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">Botox is perhaps best known for its cosmetic uses. But it\u2019s also used as treatment for a range of concerns, including:<\/p>\n<p>SpasticityTMJ painOveractive bladderExcessive sweatingMigraines<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">If you have myasthenia gravis, your providers can recommend other treatments for these conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Certain anesthesia medications<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">Certain anesthesia medications can also create risks for people with MG. Some muscle-relaxing drugs used during surgery may dangerously worsen breathing problems.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">When appropriate, local anesthetics are often safer options. Medications like propofol and sevoflurane, for example, are relatively safe in myasthenia gravis.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">If you need to be fully sedated, make sure your anesthesiologist and surgeon know you have myasthenia gravis.<\/p>\n<p>Supplements and herbal remedies<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">Over-the-counter herbs and supplements may seem harmless. But they\u2019re loosely regulated and Dr. Dib says most haven\u2019t been studied well in people with MG.<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">\u201cI don\u2019t personally recommend supplements,\u201d she states. \u201cThere\u2019s just too much we don\u2019t know about them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">She advises extra caution with:<\/p>\n<p>High-dose zinc supplements\u201cImmune-boosting\u201d productsHerbal blends or mushroom-based supplementsProducts containing quinine<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">\u201cThere\u2019s always the risk of toxicity or worsening myasthenia symptoms,\u201d she continues. \u201cThe benefits don\u2019t outweigh the potential risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">If you\u2019re considering adding a supplement to your routine, discuss it first with your healthcare providers.<\/p>\n<p>Final thoughts<\/p>\n<p data-identity=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"text-gray-800 my-rem16px text-rem19px leading-rem34px print:text-rem15px print:leading-rem20px print:font-normal print:my-rem8px  \">The list of medications to avoid with myasthenia gravis can be long.
