{"id":62464,"date":"2025-08-12T20:59:24","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T20:59:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/62464\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T20:59:24","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T20:59:24","slug":"lourdes-trip-reminded-me-nursing-is-a-loving-act-brighton-nurse-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/62464\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Lourdes trip reminded me nursing is a loving act&#8217;, Brighton nurse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mark Norman<\/p>\n<p>BBC South East Health Correspondent<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754731927_714_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/202e88c0-7394-11f0-856a-e3e76ccaf044.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"eager\" alt=\"University of Brighton A group of student nurses lined up for the camera wearing blu shorts and white cravats\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>University of Brighton<\/p>\n<p>Student nurses have returned from Lourdes supporting pilgrims<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Nursing students from Sussex have returned from a week-long pilgrimage to Lourdes, supporting people living with serious health needs and disabilities as part of an international placement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Every year, between four and six million pilgrims visit Lourdes in south-west France, one of the world&#8217;s most significant Catholic pilgrimage sites. <\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">The students from the University of Brighton accompanied The Catholic Diocese of Arundel and Brighton&#8217;s pilgrimage, supporting more than 700 pilgrims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Student nurse Anna Goacher said: &#8220;Lourdes reminded me that nursing is, at its heart, a human and loving act, and that is something I will never take for granted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/1754731927_714_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dkIvM hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/5de06100-7396-11f0-a20f-3b86f375586a.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"University of Brighton A woman  with long brown hair half smiles at the camera\" class=\"sc-d1200759-0 dvfjxj\"\/>University of Brighton<\/p>\n<p>Natalie Timmerman said the trip reminded her of the &#8220;human side of healthcare&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Ms Goacher described the trip as  &#8220;one of the most personal, emotional, and spiritually significant experiences of my nursing journey so far&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Leaving Lourdes, I carry with me not just clinical skills and experiences, but a renewed sense of the nurse I want to be,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">Fellow student Natalie Timmerman said she looked after a man who had been &#8220;dreaming of coming to Lourdes for years&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 hxuGS\">&#8220;Despite his health issues, his spirit was unshakable,&#8221;
