{"id":624856,"date":"2026-06-06T19:22:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T19:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/624856\/"},"modified":"2026-06-06T19:22:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T19:22:14","slug":"russell-bemused-by-pace-deficit-to-f1-title-rival-antonelli","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/624856\/","title":{"rendered":"Russell bemused by pace deficit to F1 title rival Antonelli"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/george-russell\/840489\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">George Russell<\/a> was left bewildered by his pace deficit to Formula 1 title rival and team-mate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/driver\/andrea-kimi-antonelli\/953410\/\" data-custom-text=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kimi Antonelli<\/a> who took pole for the Monaco Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/f1\/news\/f1-monaco-gp-antonelli-takes-crucial-pole-by-beating-verstappen-as-leclerc-crashes\/10827565\/\" data-custom-text=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The 19-year-old set a 1m12.051s to beat runner-up Max Verstappen by just 0.043s<\/a> to the top spot, while Russell struggled down in sixth, three tenths off the pace in another blow to his title hopes.<\/p>\n<p>Russell is 43 points behind leader\u00a0Antonelli despite being the heavy favourite pre-season, which he backed up by winning the Melbourne opener from pole in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/team\/mercedes\/36495\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mercedes<\/a> 1-2.<\/p>\n<p>But all four grands prix since have been won by Antonelli, who looks set to make it five considering how few overtaking opportunities there are around Monaco.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t really know what&#8217;s going on to be honest,\u201d said Russell. \u201cIt&#8217;s clearly something with my driving that&#8217;s not helping the car at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that was there at the start of the year as well and every lap I did it was&#8230; If I look at Melbourne and at least China until I have my issues, it was P1 every single session.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery lap I did was good. The last three races have just been nowhere. Even Canada, I was nowhere until the last lap of Q3 in both sessions. So I don&#8217;t have an answer for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780773733_713_george-russell-mercedes.jpg\" alt=\"George Russell, Mercedes\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">George Russell, Mercedes<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Sam Bloxham \/ LAT Images via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes has dominated the 2026 regulation change as expected and considering Russell\u2019s strong race-winning 2025 compared to Antonelli\u2019s up-and-down rookie campaign, the Briton was expected to charge towards his maiden title.<\/p>\n<p>But after Melbourne, he suffered a mechanical issue in Shanghai Q3 that paved the way for Antonelli to win from pole, before the Italian profited from a safety car in Japan to claim another victory.<\/p>\n<p>Antonelli was superior throughout Miami, a so-called \u2018bogey track\u2019 for his team-mate, before winning in Canada after Russell retired from the lead following his sprint victory.<\/p>\n<p>So, Russell seemingly cannot catch a break, particularly when his last podium came in China, and he thinks his smoother driving style doesn\u2019t suit the nimbler 2026 cars.<\/p>\n<p>That is compared to Antonelli, who is extremely quick and on the limit, which very much served him well around the principality\u2019s street track.<\/p>\n<p>Russell added: \u201cI think there&#8217;s clearly a difference in driving style between the two of us, which has been there last year as well.<\/p>\n<p>   <img decoding=\"async\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/1780773734_425_andrea-kimi-antonelli-mercedes.jpg\" alt=\"Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/p>\n<p class=\"title\">Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes<\/p>\n<p class=\"photographer\">Photo by: Sam Bloxham \/ LAT Images via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut played into my hands very well last year and it clearly is playing into his hands perfectly well this year, but it still doesn&#8217;t answer why I was so good at the start of the year and so poor now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, we need to look at why that is. It&#8217;s clear in the data. The difference is how we&#8217;re driving has such an impact on the tyres. He&#8217;s just getting the tyres in a nicer window than me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA nicer balance over the course of a lap and the pace is just coming easier for him.
