After making his feature-length directorial debut on the Roger Corman-produced Grand Theft Auto in 1977, Ron Howard<\/a> gradually phased himself out of acting to focus on his real dream of making it as a filmmaker.<\/p>\n It was a bold call for someone who\u2019d been beamed into millions of homes on a weekly basis<\/a> since they were a kid to give it all up and head down another career path, especially when The Andy Griffith Show, Happy Days, and American Graffiti star was still only in his early 20s.<\/p>\n Needless to say, it worked out very well for Howard in the long run, who sits pretty as a two-time Academy Award winner, one of the highest-grossing directors in cinema history, and has earned a reputation for being one of Hollywood\u2019s safest, most reliable, and trustworthy hands.<\/p>\n What\u2019s undeniably impressive is how thoroughly Howard managed the transition. Hollywood is littered with former child stars who struggled to reinvent themselves once the cameras stopped rolling, but he quietly became one of the industry\u2019s most dependable filmmakers instead. <\/p>\n The last time Howard was credited as a fictional figure in a film came when he reprised his role of Steve Bolander in 1979\u2019s More American Graffiti. On the small screen, he hasn\u2019t played anyone other than himself since a three-episode guest arc as Stanley in The Odd Couple, which aired in 2016, and that was his first time he\u2019d played a character on TV in 20 years.<\/p>\n With that in mind, it\u2019s reasonable to assume that Howard\u2019s thespian days are over, unless his daughter can convince him otherwise<\/a>. However, there\u2019s one part he\u2019d gladly play again after he voiced his desire to revisit a mildly antagonistic figure he knows better than anyone else: Ron Howard.<\/p>\n In Seth Rogen\u2019s AppleTV+ series The Studio, the affable director hammed it up as an exaggerated and semi-fictionalised version of himself, ending up in a hilarious faux brawl with Rogen\u2019s beleaguered studio boss, Matt Remick, throwing his trademark baseball cap with such force that it knocks Remick to the ground.<\/p>\n Further reading: Cutting Room Floor<\/p>\n It was a hilarious and scene-stealing turn that allowed Howard to unleash his latent comedy chops for the first time in a long time, and he\u2019d gladly do it again. \u201cIf I could make room in my schedule and I were asked, I\u2019d be there in a heartbeat for these guys,\u201d he told People<\/a>. \u201cThey were hilarious and fun to be with.\u201d<\/p>\n Part of the joke, of course, was that Howard has spent decades cultivating the exact opposite reputation. The industry is fuelled by oversized egos, but he has long been viewed as one of Hollywood\u2019s genuinely decent figures. Seeing him lean into an absurdly self-important version of himself gave the gag an extra layer, because audiences instinctively knew they were watching someone gleefully dismantle an image he\u2019d spent years building.<\/p>\n That said, Howard felt compelled to maintain his nice guy reputation by reiterating that he isn\u2019t an obnoxious dickhead like the guy he played in The Studio. \u201cEven if the jerk is inspired by you, it\u2019s still a character, and it\u2019s very cathartic,\u201d he explained. \u201cBecause I would never say or do those things.\u201d<\/p>\n Still, if Howard returns for a second tilt at playing \u2018Ron Howard: Jerk\u2019 in The Studio, it\u2019ll technically be the first time he\u2019s played a character twice in almost 40 years, seeing as it\u2019s a heightened version of himself.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
