For all the players Liverpool <\/a>are currently linked with for a summer transfer, perhaps none stoke excitement as much as Yan Diomande<\/a> does. The RB Leipzig winger, at just 19 years old, appears to have the cream of Europe bidding to secure his signature.<\/p>\n

Thirteen goals and ten assists across 36 games in the Bundesliga, from both flanks, suggest the young star is destined for bigger things. Liverpool have been strongly linked <\/a>with the player, as have Paris Saint-Germain<\/a>, Real Madrid and Manchester United.<\/p>\n

Salia Drame, a journalist with Ivory Coast-based outlet Abidjan Sports, has explained to the ECHO just why Diomande is in high demand. He revealed that the youngster has a profile similar to that of Reds and Senegal icon Sadio Mane.<\/p>\n

“Yan is a versatile player, capable of performing on both the left and right wings. Extremely explosive, he possesses an ability to beat defenders that is well above average,” Drame said. “He is also capable of tracking back defensively when needed, making him a player with a very wide range of skills.”<\/p>\n

Drame added: “His ability to beat defenders, his drive, and his comfort in one-on-one situations are reminiscent of Sadio Mane at the peak of his powers. As for his ability to hold the ball with his back to goal and resist pressure, it brings to mind [Ex-Chelsea forward] Eden Hazard in his best years.”<\/p>\n

Born in 2006, in the sky-scraper-laden city of Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Diomande’s ability on the pitch took him to the United States at just 15, where he joined the Florida-based DME Academy to hone his skills.<\/p>\n

In October 2023, he went on a trial at Scottish side Rangers but was unsuccessful after featuring in a pre-season game for the club’s B side against Monaco.<\/p>\n

He also turned out for Greek outfit Olympiacos in another failed trial. His early misfires have only steeled the youngster to the highs and lows of the professional game.<\/p>\n

“I was alone when I went on those trials, but I’m grateful for those experiences,” Diomande said earlier this year. They helped me understand that I can make it through life on my own if I have to.”<\/p>\n

Drame concurs and believes Diomande possesses an elite mentality. “Yan comes from a working-class neighbourhood in Abidjan, where many young people dream of becoming professional footballers,” the journalist said.<\/p>\n

“Reaching such a level coming from Yopougon (suburb of Abidjan) is a testament to great resilience, a strong character, and a particularly well-developed work ethic.”<\/p>\n

It was ultimately a lively move to La Liga side Leganes in November 2024 where Diomande caught Leipzig’s attention, who swooped for him a year later for around \u00a320million.<\/p>\n

Drame believes Diomande’s raw talent could even make him a future recipient of the Golden Boy award, an accolade given to players under 21 who have taken Europe’s top leagues by storm.<\/p>\n

Past winners include: Wayne Rooney, Sergio Aguero, Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal and Jude Bellingham. PSG star Desire Doue won the award in 2025.<\/p>\n

“With his technical qualities, his explosiveness, his personality on the pitch, and his ability to make a difference, he has all the tools to eventually become one of the best players in the world,” Drame said.<\/p>\n

Just what are Liverpool’s chances of landing the forward? The player himself has previously expressed an affection for the Reds.<\/p>\n

“I want to play at Anfield<\/a>, I want to play for Liverpool,” Diomande said earlier this year. “I’m a big fan of Liverpool. I’m a big fan of Liverpool because my father’s dream is to see me play at Anfield. So that’s my dream. You know, to fulfil my father’s dream is a dream for me too.”<\/p>\n

Diomande subsequently tempered those remarks, however, and claimed that his father also supports reigning European champions PSG.<\/p>\n

Either way, it’s going to take serious financial muscle to land the starlet. While Leipzig are said to be eager to retain Diomande<\/a>, with the winger under contract until 2030, it’s thought a bid north of \u00a387m could prise him from the German side.<\/p>\n

A big World Cup from Diomande this year could also inflate that figure by some distance. However, Leipzig chairman Oliver Mintzlaff said he wouldn’t part with Diomande regardless of “what price is being offered”.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, whoever signs him could hit the jackpot if Drame’s words about the player’s ceiling are anything to go by. He also made one final comparison to another Premier League<\/a> hero of yesteryear.<\/p>\n

He concluded: “Yan Diomande is now the darling of the Ivorian public. Many see in him the future great superstar of Ivorian football, following in the footsteps of [former Chelsea striker] Didier Drogba… Diomande could bring the freshness and dynamism that the Reds have sorely missed.”<\/p>\n
