{"id":625821,"date":"2026-06-07T10:39:32","date_gmt":"2026-06-07T10:39:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/625821\/"},"modified":"2026-06-07T10:39:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-07T10:39:32","slug":"st-teresas-hospice-darlington-calls-for-more-sustainable-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/625821\/","title":{"rendered":"St Teresa&#8217;s Hospice Darlington calls for more sustainable funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  St Teresa\u2019s Hospice, which looked after more than 1,200 people last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/25945329.hospices-say-action-needed-cliff-edge-funding-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">continues to face &#8220;significant financial pressures\u201d as both demand and costs rise.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The charity has been providing end-of-life and palliative care for the last 40 years &#8211; but without more support, it faces an \u201cincreasingly difficult\u201d future.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  It comes after Parliamentarians and supporters handed a letter to Number 10 on Tuesday calling on the Government to give \u201curgent priority to ensuring that hospices are able to continue delivering the vital care on which so many rely\u201d.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The group argue that, despite previous funding announcements which were welcomed across the sector, significant concerns remain over long-term sustainability.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>St Teresa&#8217;s Hospice, Darlington (Image: The Northern Echo)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Nicola Myers, chief executive of St Teresa\u2019s, said the hospice is proud that 100 per cent of people using its services say they would recommend it to their friends and family &#8211; but that finances are continuing to prove challenging.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She told The Northern Echo: \u201cIn the past few years, the proportion of our running costs covered by government funding has fallen from 35 per cent to 25 per cent, while demand for our services and the cost of delivering them have continued to rise.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cLike many hospices, we have absorbed rising costs wherever possible and have worked hard to protect our services.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>(Image: Sarah Caldecott)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe reality is that there are no easy savings left to make.\u201d\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Myers said that without more financial support, hospices will find it increasingly difficult to meet growing demand while investing in services the communities \u201cneed and deserve\u201d.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  She continued: \u201cHospices are not an optional extra; they are a vital part of the healthcare system.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIf we are to continue providing the care that local families rely on, there must be a fairer and more sustainable approach to hospice funding now and in the years ahead.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\" alt=\"St Teresa's Hospice\"\/>St Teresa&#8217;s Hospice (Image: STAN SEATON)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Hospices in the region have long been calling for \u201curgent&#8221; action over the &#8220;cliff edge&#8221; funding crisis.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Last month, it was announced that Teesside Hospice and Butterwick Hospice were set to merge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/26100898.teesside-hospice-butterwick-hospice-announce-merger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in a bid to protect their future amid &#8220;unending&#8221; financial woes.\u00a0<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The decision was made to ensure \u201clong-term sustainability\u201d of end-of-life care across the North East at a time when demand is increasing year on year.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  St Cuthbert\u2019s Hospice in Durham was even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenorthernecho.co.uk\/news\/24801050.st-cuthberts-cuts-wonderful-hospice-are-travesty\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">forced to lay off 21 members of staff last year in a \u201cdevastating\u201d blow.\u00a0<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  This week, entrepreneur Corin Dalby handed in the letter to Number 10 calling for more support, backed by approximately 285 MPs and peers.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  He gathered outside Downing Street on Tuesday armed with \u2018fair funding now\u2019 signs alongside people from across the political spectrum.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The Government soon plans to publish a new palliative care and end of life care modern service framework to &#8220;improve access, quality, and sustainability&#8221;
