John McEnroe<\/a> has bemoaned the absence of Carlos Alcaraz<\/a> at the French Open and the upcoming Grand Slam at Wimbledon<\/a>. The American legend said he was ‘depressed’ to learn of the Spaniard’s withdrawal from both tournaments.<\/p>\n The 23-year-old confirmed he was pulling out after being struck down by tenosynovitis<\/a>, an inflammation of the tendon sheath in his right wrist. Alcaraz had reached the final at each of the last five Slams at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, claiming victory in four of them, as he enjoyed a fierce rivalry with world<\/a> No. 1 Jannik Sinner.<\/p>\n McEnroe, 67, a three-time champion at SW19 himself, was left crestfallen by Alcaraz’s impending absence. “I know I was depressed, bummed out that he wasn’t going to be here,” McEnroe said on the Off Court With Greg Rusedski podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n “He’s the best representative we have in our sport right now in terms of what he brings to the table. However, he reaffirmed his decision not to compete in any grass events this year.<\/p>\n “My recovery is going well and I\u2019m feeling much better, but unfortunately I\u2019m still not ready to compete, which is why I have to withdraw from the grass-court swing at Queen\u2019s and Wimbledon,” Alcaraz said. “They are two truly special tournaments for me and I will miss them a lot. We\u2019ll keep working to come back as soon as possible!”<\/p>\n Without two-time French Open champion Alcaraz, there was no shortage of upsets in the French capital, with Sinner crashing out in round two after falling victim to a stunning fightback from Juan Manuel Cerundolo. In pursuit of his long-awaited 25th Slam, the Serbian stormed into a 2-0 sets lead before Fonseca staged a remarkable comeback, becoming only the second player since Jurgen Melzer back in 2010 to beat Djokovic at a Slam.<\/p>\n Later in the tournament, the unseeded world No. 104 Matteo Arnaldi made it to his first ever Grand Slam semi-final before being knocked out by Flavio Cobolli. The Italian then pushed Alexander Zverev to the limit in Sunday’s final before the German finally ended his lengthy wait for a maiden Major title at the age of 29.<\/p>\n Zverev secured the French Open crown with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 victory over Cobolli, some four years after suffering a devastating ankle injury on the very same Philippe Chatrier court. Moving on from the disappointment of Alcaraz missing out, McEnroe chose to focus on the positives of several lesser-known players enjoying their moment in the spotlight.<\/p>\n “It’s been a crazy couple of weeks that has in some ways made up for it, and it’s opened the door obviously because people that didn’t think they’d be in this position have been given an opportunity,” the American icon added. “From that standpoint, it’s good.<\/p>\n “But whenever your best player, or first and second or they’re tied or whoever you want to say is better, it hurts. So when I heard he [Alcaraz] pulled out of Wimbledon too, that was a bummer.
