The 32-year-old Canadian picked up his marker<\/a> on the green despite still having the chance to putt for par, which, if he had made it, would have continued the play-off he was competing in.<\/p>\n He featured in an eight-for-three play-off following a tight qualifying session in Canada, making it to the last three contenders. <\/p>\n William Mouw and John Parry had already secured their places in the US Open<\/a>, with Svensson, Max McGreevy and Matt Wallace left.<\/p>\n English golfer Wallace made par on the third hole in Ontario, while McGreevy made birdie, securing his spot in the major. <\/p>\n READ MORE ON GOLF<\/p>\n However, after McGreevy putted, Svensson instantly broke the rules, picking up his marker and not attempting his own putt. <\/p>\n That meant he forfeited the hole – but he didn’t appear to realise that if he had made par, the play-off would have continued.<\/p>\n After Svensson picked up his marker, the three golfers shook hands before an official entered the green to inform him that, as he’d picked up, it would be Wallace who claimed a vital US Open<\/a> place.<\/p>\n The Englishman took the first alternate position for the event at Shinnecock Hills, following Svensson’s mistake.<\/p>\n And the first alternate position from the qualifying in Canada is almost guaranteed to get a spot in the field.<\/p>\n Svensson’s error, which appeared to come in a split-second decision, may now cost him a place in the US Open completely.<\/p>\n 4<\/p>\n Svensson (right) could be seen picking up his marker after McGreevy (left) made birdieCredit: Golf Channel \/ X 4<\/p>\n A US Open qualifying official then entered the green to inform him of his errorCredit: Golf Channel \/ XWho else qualified for the US Open?<\/p>\n Alongside McGreevy, Mouw and Parry, Emiliano Grillo, Alejandro Tosti and Marcelo Rozo all qualified for the US Open in Canada. <\/p>\n Meanwhile, across the other nine events held on Monday, some more standout names booked their spots in the major.<\/p>\n Max Greyserman and Kevin Roy qualified from New York, with Chris Kirk among those claiming a place in Georgia.<\/p>\n Neal Shipley, Taylor Montgomery and Jackson Suber all secured a US Open ticket in Ohio, California and Maryland. <\/p>\n Davis Thompson and Billy Horschel will also be in the field.<\/p>\n The US Open will take place from Thursday, June 18 to Sunday, June 21 at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, New York.<\/p>\n 4<\/p>\n Shinnecock will host the 126th edition of the US Open next weekCredit: Getty<\/p>\n Scottie Scheffler<\/a>, Rory McIlroy<\/a>, Cam Young and Justin Rose<\/a> will be sure to contend for major glory, along with reigning champion J.J.
