Over 40,000 tickets have been sold for the final fight of Katie Taylor’s professional boxing career at Croke Park, according to her promoter.<\/p>\n
Taylor will fight Flora Pili at the biggest stadium in Ireland on Saturday, 5 September.<\/p>\n
Two pre-sale events took place this morning with 50% of the capacity of Croke Park sold.<\/p>\n
A virtual queue of over 30,000 was reported early in the sale.<\/p>\n
The remaining tickets will go on sale this Friday. Matchroom say they expect the event to sell out.<\/p>\n
Matchroom Sport chairman Eddie Hearn described the sales today as “incredible”.<\/p>\n
It’ll be the first time that boxing has taken place at the GAA’s HQ since Muhammad Ali fought Alvin Lewis in July 1972.<\/p>\n
“We’ve actually brought boxing back to Croke Park,” Taylor said of her upcoming swansong.<\/p>\n
“This is going to be the most iconic moment of my whole career.<\/p>\n
“I have a chance to become a three-time undisputed champion, how amazing is that? The perfect way to end my career.”<\/p>\n
Taylor has engaged in a promotional tour around Ireland in the last week, featuring with local and national media to promote the fight.<\/p>\n
She also appeared on the pitch during half-time of the Leinster Hurling final at Croker.<\/p>\n
It will be a third and final professional bout of her career to be staged on the island, having previously fought twice at the 3Arena.<\/p>\n
She will likely now make history by selling over 80,000 tickets in the outdoor venue.<\/p>\n
