The competition<\/p>\n

Honor has really been pushing the envelope with its V series. The Magic V6 is one of the toughest foldables build-wise, but it’s also one of the thinnest. It has the most advanced chipset and camera system, some of the best screens, and it also has one of the largest batteries inside a foldable. <\/p>\n

The foldable market is still a developing niche, but things appear to have started maturing. Honor, Samsung and Oppo are putting serious efforts and are leading the industry. That’s why it’s only natural to look at what the other two pioneers have to offer.<\/p>\n

Let’s start with the most widely available one, the Galaxy Z Fold7. It’s almost a year old by now, which means it is now much cheaper than it was, about \u20ac500 cheaper than the Magic V6. The Fold7 has the previous 8 Elite chip, which is still a mighty platform with a long future ahead, and the phone remains one of the most interesting foldables with its classic design, versatile cameras, and the powerful One UI. It’s hard to believe what we are going to say, but if your budget is more limited, this is probably your go-to foldable.<\/p>\n

The Oppo Find N6 is the Magic V6’s biggest rival at the moment before the next generation of Galaxy Fold comes out. The Oppo has larger screens, almost the same level of protection, and it is the first foldable to achieve a zero-feel crease – yes, Oppo leads in this regard. The Find N6 has similar cameras, battery life and charging options, but there is a small catch with its 8 Elite Gen 5 chip here – it has a 7-core CPU instead of the standard 8-core design. Still, performance between the two is similar due to Honor’s choice of dialing back the chipset performance in the default Balanced mode. So if you are looking for a large screen foldable and a more traditional design, the Find N6 might be the one for you.<\/p>\n

Finally, Honor’s own Magic V5 is also worth looking into as it offers much of the same user experience at a lower price point. <\/p>\n

Our verdict<\/p>\n

Honor Magic V6 has a great foldable design – at least as far as protection and thickness are concerned, the most powerful chip, a versatile camera kit with superb quality, and long battery life with pretty fast charging options.<\/p>\n

The Magic V6 design is impressive, no two ways about that. The same goes for the two OLEDs – they are bright, with incredibly dynamic refresh rates, and they support every popular HDR format.<\/p>\n

We were happy to see the fully-fledged Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 inside the Magic V6, but we were surprised to see that Honor has capped its performance rather unusually. To get the maximum speed out of the chip, you will need to switch to Performance mode. But to get the best sustained performance, you’d be better off using the Balanced mode, where you’d be able to enjoy only half of the CPU’s nominal power. <\/p>\n

For what it’s worth, we couldn’t tell we were using a capped CPU until we performed the CPU tests, so the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 certainly provides higher performance than needed in daily use, but still, it’s an unexpected limitation that’s to be considered. <\/p>\n

The battery life and the charging speed turned out to be impressive, and the speaker quality as well. And we do love what Honor has done with MagicOS; it’s thoroughly powerful and looks great. And if you are not fans of the iOS-inspired translucency, you can tone it down in Settings.<\/p>\n

Finally, the cameras did not disappoint either; just the opposite. They delivered Honor’s true-to-life photo and video quality, which the maker has been known for across the board, no matter if it was day or night.<\/p>\n

The Magic V6 seems to be an excellent foldable with a great balance between design, display quality, battery life and camera image quality. The thermal aspects of high-performance chipsets seem to be the Achilles’ heel of super thin phones, and Honor has no way around it. It remains to be seen how the competition will overcome this challenge, with both Samsung and Apple expected to announce their new foldables by the end of summer.<\/p>\n

\n CPU performance is halved unless you are in Performance battery mode, which comes with the downside of heavy thermal throttling.
