A resident who dumped a shed and other waste in Fairstead has been hit with a £300 fine.

It comes after West Norfolk Council’s Waste Management Team became aware of concerns from other Fairstead residents that rubbish had been fly-tipped on land at Silver Green.

The land belonged to Freebridge Community Housing, so the borough council’s enforcement team worked with the housing association to investigate.

The investigation found that a resident who lived nearby had deposited a shed – which she had taken down from her garden – on the land.

Evidence traced the culprit, who was also a Freebridge tenant, back to her home nearby – and so she was interviewed by both the borough council and Freebridge.

The resident admitted the offence relating to the shed and other waste, but she said not all of the rubbish was hers.

Having admitted the fly-tipping offence, the resident was issued with a £300 fixed penalty notice, which she subsequently paid.

By the time the payment was made, Freebridge cleared the waste and made sure the resident understood the implications for her tenancy by agreeing an Acceptable Behaviour Contract.

Should the contract not be followed, it could lead to further action including the loss of tenancy.

Cllr Sandra Squire, cabinet member for environment and coastal at West Norfolk Council, said: “Fly-tipping is always unacceptable and has impacts both on the community and to the wider environment.

“We will work with partners to identify those responsible and we will take action against them.

“I am pleased that staff from our Clean Neighbourhoods Enforcement Team and our Public Open Spaces team will be joining the Fairstead Voluntary, Community, Faith, and Social Enterprise partnership hub for Fairstead to involve the community to improve opportunities for health, environment and support for residents in Fairstead and King’s Reach.”
