some people develop them a few days later, while others might not notice anything for months, or even years.

An outbreak can be triggered by factors such as stress, poor sleep, illness, hormonal changes, and even prolonged sun exposure while on holiday.

How is genital herpes treated?

There is currently no cure for genital herpes, but doctors say treatment is effective and many people use it to manage the condition successfully.

‘Antiviral medication can help shorten outbreaks, ease symptoms and reduce the likelihood of passing the virus to others,’ says Dr Clair.

‘Many people live normal, healthy lives with herpes and experience long periods without symptoms.’

How to reduce the risk of genital herpes and other STIs?

The best way to reduce the risk of an STI is to use a condom when having sex; however, recent research from Superdrug Online Doctor found that 86 per cent of single Brits don’t always use one, and more than 30 per cent never use them at all.

Things get a little trickier with herpes, because using a condom cannot completely ‘eliminate the risk’, warns Dr Clair.

This is because areas of skin not covered by a condom can still carry the virus, and it spreads through skin-to-skin contact.

As such, she adds: ‘It is important to ensure that regular testing and open dialogue with sexual partners is a priority’.

Arrow
MORE: This is how frequently women orgasm through oral, masturbation and penetrative sex, based on age

Arrow
MORE: Why men over 50 keep getting things stuck up their bottoms

Arrow
MORE: This little-known side effect of the pill can make your clitoris shrink

Comment now

   Comments

Add Metro as a Preferred Source on Google

    Add as preferred source

    The Slice

Your free newsletter guide to the best London has on offer, from drinks deals to restaurant reviews.

An STI that can cause ‘painful’ symptoms is on the rise (Picture: Shutterstock / New Africa) The UK…

[10
59,102,655,31552,56,54,55
post-633598","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-gb","tag-health","tag-lifestyle","tag-sexual-health","tag-uk","tag-united-kingdom","tag-unitedkingdom
["GET
