The all clear has been given at the Pentagon,\u00a0the sprawling facility that houses the US Department of Defense, after firefighters were called to investigate a \u201chazardous materials incident\u201d.<\/p>\n
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said on Thursday that a \u201cshelter-in-place order\u201d had been issued after a possible air quality issue was detected.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Pentagon has sophisticated systems to ensure the safety of the building and its occupants,\u201d Parnell said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose systems have detected an air quality \u2060issue necessitating precautionary measures \u2060until we determine its significance.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a post on X, Arlington County fire and rescue also said its \u201cunits, including our Hazardous Materials Team, are currently operating at the Pentagon in support of PFPA\u2019s Hazmat Team during a hazardous materials incident\u201d.<\/p>\n
In a statement provided to Al Jazeera, Parnell later said that \u201csubsequent testing confirmed no hazard exists, and normal operations have resumed\u201d.<\/p>\n
It was not immediately clear what initiated the issue.<\/p>\n
The 600,000-square-metre (6.46-million-square-foot) Pentagon is the world\u2019s largest low-rise office building.<\/p>\n
