A young police officer seriously injured while attending a crash has died in hospital.<\/p>\n
Northumbria Police<\/a>‘s Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine today paid tribute to PC Jess Turnbull, who passed away yesterday, saying she made the \u201cultimate sacrifice\u201d to keep our communities safe.<\/p>\n The 19-year-old, who became a police officer last September, was allegedly struck by a black Mercedes CLC while responding to a collision on the A189<\/a>, in Cramlington, Northumberland, on Monday night. The Mercedes was not connected to the original crash.<\/p>\n Chief Cons Jardine today said the force was in mourning, as she paid tribute to Jess, who worked as a response officer in Northumberland.<\/p>\n Northumbria Police’s Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine (Image: ChronicleLive)<\/p>\n \u201cIt is with deep sadness that we share the tragic news that police officer Jess Turnbull has died in the line of duty”, she said. \u201cThis is an extremely tragic incident where Jess lost her life while serving and protecting our communities.<\/p>\n \u201cJess was responding to a collision in Cramlington. While at the scene she was struck by a car that was unconnected with the original incident. She was taken to hospital where yesterday, surrounded by her loved ones she tragically died.<\/p>\n \u201cOur thoughts very much continue to be with her family, friends and all those who have been impacted by this devastating loss. We will continue to support her loved ones in any way we can.<\/p>\n \u201cPolicing is a family, and we are mourning the passing of not only a colleague and a friend, but also our own family member, and we will continue to support each other during this extremely difficult time.<\/p>\n \u201cJess was relatively new in service, with so much still to look forward to in her career and life. She was a dedicated and committed officer who always sought to do her best to keep her communities safe.<\/p>\n \u201cEvery single day police officers up and down the country face danger to protect the public. Thankfully, most go home, tragically on this occasion Jess did not.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m grateful to all those who wear the uniform with pride to keep us all safe. Jess made the ultimate sacrifice and will never be forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n The scene of the collision on the A189 spine road in Cramlington(Image: Newcastle Chronicle)<\/p>\n Today the flag at Northumbria Police\u2019s headquarters, in Wallsend, was flying at half mast.<\/p>\n A 73-year-old man who was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving was taken to hospital but later discharged.<\/p>\n He has now been re-arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail<\/a>.<\/p>\n Jess was attending a report of a collision between a Land Rover Freelander and a Ford Explorer<\/a>, at around 11.10pm on Monday, when she was allegedly struck.<\/p>\n She was outside a marked police car at the time, officers said. The road was closed for more than 16 hours following the crash.<\/a><\/p>\n Northumbria Police has asked that anyone who wants to leave tributes to Jess does not visit the scene for safety reasons.<\/p>\n Flowers can be left at the flagpole outside the force\u2019s headquarters, in Middle Engine Lane.<\/p>\n Northumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Susan Dungworth, said: “No words can ease the pain they will be experiencing at this time, but my thoughts are with PC Jess Turnbull\u2019s family, friends and colleagues as they come to terms with this unimaginable loss.<\/p>\n “Jessica had chosen a life of service to others, and her loss is a reminder of the risks police officers face every single day while doing their best to keep our communities safe. She will be remembered in so many ways, and with gratitude for committing herself to a career of putting others first. Heartfelt condolences go to everyone who knew and loved Jess, from myself and the team here at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner.”<\/p>\n And North East Mayor Kim McGuinness added: “My thoughts and heartfelt condolences go to Jess\u2019s family, and the wider Northumbria Police family at this incredibly sad and difficult time. Putting on the uniform each day takes pride and courage, and at such a young age, Jess still had her whole service and life ahead of her.<\/p>\n “Jess was protecting our communities, putting others before herself, and she will be remembered for doing her duty. This will have a huge impact on her colleagues, friends and family, and other serving officers across the region, and my thoughts go out to you all.”<\/p>\n Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses.
