{"id":634961,"date":"2026-06-12T14:17:13","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T14:17:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/634961\/"},"modified":"2026-06-12T14:17:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T14:17:13","slug":"kane-williamson-retires-from-new-zealand-duty-and-ends-involvement-in-england-test-series-new-zealand-cricket-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/634961\/","title":{"rendered":"Kane Williamson retires from New Zealand duty and ends involvement in England Test series | New Zealand cricket team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will play no further part in the Test series against England after retiring from all international cricket with immediate effect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Williamson brings an end to a 16-year career marked by numerous accolades and by captaining his side to the title in the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The 35-year-old batter made his debut in the longest format against India in November 2010 in Ahmedabad, and played 110 Tests in all, scoring 9,515 runs at an average of 54.06. He is New Zealand\u2019s all-time leading international run-scorer with 19,346 runs across all formats, including 48 centuries and six double-centuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I\u2019ve given it my all in every match I\u2019ve played for New Zealand,\u201d Williamson said in a statement. \u201cContinuing with anything less wouldn\u2019t be right and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI leave feeling optimistic about where this group is heading. He led the Test side for 40 matches including the 2021 World Test Championship final against India.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He won 22 Tests and scored 11 hundreds as captain before stepping down from the role in 2022. Williamson\u2019s list of accolades includes being named the International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/cricket\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cricket<\/a> Council\u2019s cricketer of 2015 and Test player of 2019, while also winning the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for New Zealand\u2019s best performer on a record four occasions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">New Zealand\u2019s coach, Rob Walter, paid tribute, adding: \u201cAnyone who\u2019s had the privilege of working with Kane understands he is a very special player and person.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cKane\u2019s always put the team first and although we\u2019re disappointed to see him go, we\u2019re happy to know he\u2019s content and at peace with his decision.
