Kevin Ponniah has been appointed as the Regional Director for the Americas for BBC News and BBC World Service.<\/p>\n
The appointment forms part of the rollout for the BBC\u2019s previously announced international operating model which places greater emphasis on rooting editorial output and accountability in the BBC\u2019s global hubs.<\/p>\n
As Regional Director for the Americas, Kevin is BBC News\u2019 most senior representative across North and South America, responsible for editorial as well as operational matters in the region. Based in Washington DC, he will lead English output across the region as well as BBC News Mundo, the BBC\u2019s Spanish language service, and BBC News Brasil.<\/p>\n

This announcement follows the appointment of Juliet Njeri as Regional Director for Africa and Richard Colebourn as Regional Director for Europe. The Regional Director roles form a central part of the BBC\u2019s international operating model. As well as ensuring editorial excellence and operational accountability, the directors are tasked with growing audiences across their region.<\/p>\n
Over the past year, Kevin has served as Interim Director for the Americas. Prior to that he was Head of Digital News for North America, where he led the expansion of teams and coverage in the US and Canada. He previously set up BBC News\u2019 Digital Live team, steering output during Covid, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Kevin first joined the BBC as an online reporter and editor, following several years as a newspaper reporter based in South East Asia.<\/p>\n
