Two delivery vans belonging to a popular Newry family business have been destroyed in an arson attack.<\/p>\n

The vehicles, which were owned by Shelbourne Bakery on the city\u2019s Hill Street, were set alight shortly before 11.25pm on Friday night in the North Street car park.<\/p>\n

The fire service attended the scene and extinguished the flames, but both vans were gutted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vehicles were completely destroyed as a result of this fire – and were treating this report as arson,\u201d said a police spokesperson <\/p>\n

\u201cThankfully, there were no reports of any injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"ArsonFlames block the road at the Meadow Estate in Newry, where the fire service came under attack on Friday. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s understood the incident is not being treated as hate related by the PSNI, and is not believed to be linked to the recent disorder.<\/p>\n

The attack in North Street came after an earlier incident in the Meadow area of Newry, where items were set on fire in the middle of the road at Clanrye Avenue.<\/p>\n

When fire crews responded to the call, they were pelted with stones by youths with their faces covered. The PSNI helicopter was deployed in response.<\/p>\n

Newry Sinn F\u00e9in Councillor Aidan Mathers condemned the incidents.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we witnessed in the Meadow Estate tonight is completely unacceptable and must be condemned by everyone. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe anti-social behaviour of those involved caused significant fear and disruption for local residents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Labelling the attack on the firefighters as \u201cdisgraceful\u201d, Cllr Mathers appealed to parents to speak to young people about the consequences of such actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose involved need to fully consider the impact their behaviour is having on the wider community, as well as the potential consequences for their own futures should they face criminal charges,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Hill Street arson has also been condemned by Newry councillor Valerie Harte.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis reckless act has caused significant damage and disruption to a local business and has no place in our community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLocal businesses are the backbone of our local economy, and they deserve to be able to operate without fear of intimidation, vandalism or criminal damage.<\/p>\n
