Romantic equality is often regarded as the foundation of healthy relationships. Yet flourishing couples routinely accept striking inequalities. The one inequality they rarely survive is inequality in respect. Some forms of inequality undermine a relationship, while others may actually strengthen attraction<\/a>.<\/p>\n It is useful to distinguish between equality and equity. Equality implies an exact 50\u201350 split. Equity means that each partner contributes according to their circumstances, abilities, and available resources. This distinction runs through the four forms of romantic equality discussed below.<\/p>\n We can distinguish four major kinds of romantic equality: (1) equality in market value, (2) equality of investment in household labor, (3) equality of love, and (4) equality of respect.<\/p>\n 1. Equality in Market Value<\/p>\n “When I got married, I did not know my true market value. Now I am married and have wrinkles, and it is too late.” \u2014 Woman<\/p>\n Romantic market value refers to a person’s overall desirability in the mating environment. It includes assets such as attractiveness<\/a>, wealth, status, and accomplishments, as well as qualities like kindness, emotional intelligence<\/a>, charm, and humor<\/a>.<\/p>\n Large disparities in market value can create relationship tensions. The partner perceived as having higher value may feel able to “do better,” while the other may experience insecurity, envy, or jealousy<\/a>. Such asymmetries are associated with a greater likelihood of infidelity<\/a> and relationship instability (Prins et al., 1993).<\/p>\n Nevertheless, complete equality is neither common nor necessary. Research suggests that people generally seek partners who are somewhat more desirable than themselves\u2014but still within a realistic range (Bruch & Newman, 2018). Indeed, many highly accomplished individuals prefer partners who equal or surpass them in intelligence<\/a> and achievement (Whelan, 2006). Moderate differences may enhance attraction; large differences often create strain.<\/p>\n 2. Equality of Investment in Household Labor<\/p>\n “Housework can’t kill you, but why take the chance?” \u2014 Phyllis Diller<\/p>\n Across the world, heterosexual couples continue to divide household labor unequally, despite gradual social progress (Jaspers et al., 2022). Flourishing couples typically strive for fairness rather than mathematical symmetry. This applies not only to household chores but also to childcare, emotional support, and relationship maintenance. A fair arrangement does not require identical contributions, but neither should it place the burden primarily on one partner. Perceived unfairness in domestic labor is consistently associated with resentment and lower relationship satisfaction.<\/p>\n 3. Equality of Love<\/p>\n “Loving someone who doesn’t love you back is like hugging a cactus. The tighter you hold on, the more it hurts.” \u2014 Unknown<\/p>\n Unrequited love is one of life’s most painful experiences. Yet some people would rather love more than be loved more.<\/p>\n Consider Albert, a divorced<\/a> man in his 50s. After dating Debra for about a year, he ended the relationship because, although he cared deeply for her, he did not feel sufficiently in love. Nearly a year later, after dating other women, he returned, proposed marriage<\/a>, and explained: “She loves me like no one else ever has.” When Albert asked Debra why she wanted to be with someone who loved her less intensely, she replied that she preferred loving more than being loved more.<\/p>\n This story illustrates that romantic fulfillment does not always require equal love. Some people find meaning in loving deeply; others in being deeply loved. The intensity of love is rarely identical in both partners, and perfect symmetry is uncommon. What matters is that both partners possess enough love to sustain a flourishing relationship.<\/p>\n
