serious injury by dangerous driving after an incident involving a loading vehicle which has left a teenage girl in a critical condition in hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Police attended the Chalkwell Park area of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/southend-on-sea\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Southend-on-Sea<\/a>, Essex, at about 12.30am on Saturday after receiving a report of an incident involving a \u201csmall articulated loading vehicle\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A spokesperson for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/essex\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Essex<\/a> police said the girl suffered \u201csignificant injuries\u201d and her family were being supported as she remained in hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He added that an 18-year-old man from Westcliff and a 17-year-old boy from Leigh-on-Sea were in custody for questioning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The spokesperson said: \u201cA group was reported to have taken unauthorised control of a small articulated loading vehicle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe girl is believed to have been involved in an incident with the vehicle and sustained significant injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cOfficers and ambulance crews attended promptly, and a cordon remains in place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cParamedics took the girl to hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAs part of our early inquiries, officers have arrested an 18-year-old man from Westcliff and a 17-year-old boy from Leigh-on-Sea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThey remain in custody on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Appealing for witnesses and any videos of the incident, the spokesperson added: \u201cWe know there were a large number of young people in the area at the time, and we believe some may have witnessed what happened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe urgently need to hear from anyone with information or footage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The park was the site of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2025\/jun\/28\/five-children-taken-to-hospital-after-tree-falls-in-essex-park\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fatal accident last year<\/a>, when a seven-year-old girl was killed and her six-year-old cousin injured after a tree fell on
