The UK\u00a0and Japan\u00a0are\u00a0expected to agree\u00a0investment\u00a0creating\u00a0tens of thousands of new jobs and more than \u00a318 billion in economic gains,\u00a0alongside a new partnership at the forefront of next-generation technologies.<\/p>\n
Together the deals\u00a0will back British industries\u00a0across\u00a0technology, clean energy, infrastructure development,\u00a0and\u00a0life sciences, supporting\u00a0long-term growth across the\u00a0country.\u00a0These\u202fare sectors at the heart of the UK\u2019s Modern Industrial\u202fStrategy and\u202fbuilding\u00a0on a relationship\u00a0with Japan\u00a0already worth \u00a3140 billion.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister\u00a0will\u00a0welcome his\u00a0Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi to\u00a0Downing Street\u00a0today [Sunday]\u00a0ahead of the G7 in \u00c9vian-les-Bains.<\/p>\n
Japanese and British business\u00a0leaders will join the two\u00a0prime ministers for\u00a0a roundtable discussion\u00a0on\u00a0future opportunities for economic growth where\u00a0over ten commercial and government agreements\u00a0are expected to be\u00a0signed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The visit delivers a major vote of confidence in the UK economy, with Japanese investors setting out\u00a0a\u00a0five-year investment pipeline worth\u00a0more than \u00a39\u00a0billion,\u00a0expected to\u00a0build new towns and provide high-quality office space and innovation hubs.<\/p>\n

As G7 economies and close security partners,\u00a0we are working together\u00a0with Japan\u00a0on\u00a0some of the most innovative technology in the world, harnessing the best of British and Japanese research and industry\u00a0to deliver growth and security to every corner of the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n
At the heart of the visit\u00a0will be\u00a0a landmark Offshore Wind Compact,\u00a0developed in close partnership with Great British Energy to unlock\u00a0up to\u00a0\u00a39 billion in Japanese investment into the UK\u2019s offshore wind sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It\u00a0will support\u00a0the development of\u00a05.9GW of floating offshore wind projects in the UK, including the Ossian and Green Volt projects off the East Coast in Scotland alongside the Erebus project in the Celtic Sea.\u00a0<\/p>\n
These pioneering projects\u00a0will support jobs across the country, and when built, generate enough clean electricity to power 8 million homes.<\/p>\n
By boosting\u00a0homegrown\u00a0clean energy, the deal will help reduce reliance on\u00a0volatile global fossil\u00a0fuel\u00a0markets, strengthen energy security, help get\u00a0bills\u00a0down for good,\u00a0and makes the UK Japan\u2019s leading clean energy partner in Europe.<\/p>\n
Hitachi Energy UK\u00a0is\u00a0set to create\u00a0at least 500 new jobs over the next five years, providing vital expansion of the UK grid and bringing clean power that delivers growth. This includes 100 highly skilled roles at Hitachi Energy\u2019s newly opened\u00a0Glasgow Centre of Excellence, and over \u00a318\u00a0million\u00a0investment in\u00a0a purpose-built facility in Stafford.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Rolls-Royce will deepen collaboration with Japan\u2019s Atomic Energy Agency signing a new agreement with the UK National Nuclear Laboratory to develop next generation nuclear technologies. And our national laboratories (UKAEA and QST) and leading private companies will deepen their collaboration on fusion energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Communities like Hatfield are set to\u00a0benefit\u00a0from the package of deals, where Japanese life science firm, Eisai, is set to invest \u00a348 million. The investment will create a new packaging facility for its innovative dementia treatment, backed by government funding.\u202f<\/p>\n
The\u00a0leaders\u00a0are\u00a0also\u00a0expected to agree a new\u00a0partnership to accelerate cooperation on\u00a0the\u00a0technologies\u00a0of the future.\u00a0The\u00a0cutting-edge\u00a0UK-Japan Frontier Tech Partnership (FTP),\u00a0will see\u00a0British research\u00a0translated into scalable technology with Japanese investment,\u00a0from AI\u00a0and\u00a0quantum,\u00a0to\u00a0civil nuclear and defence tech.<\/p>\n
Building\u00a0on\u00a0momentum from\u00a0London\u00a0Tech Week,\u00a0the FTP\u00a0will deliver groundbreaking impact for the UK and Japan. This includes British\u00a0firm ORCA\u00a0Computing\u00a0landing a landmark export deal\u00a0\u2013 one of the first times a major corporation anywhere in the world has bought a quantum computer.<\/p>\n
For the first time, a formal partnership\u00a0between\u00a0the UK Semiconductor Centre and Rapidus, Japan\u2019s\u00a0state-of-the-art manufacturing facility,\u00a0creates a direct pathway for the UK semiconductor\u00a0sector to manufacture\u00a0cutting-edge\u00a0chips\u00a0used to power mobile phones, vehicles\u00a0and modern devices.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, the Prime Ministers are expected\u202fto\u00a0confirm their shared commitment to the Global Combat Air\u00a0Programme, and\u00a0discuss the launch of the next phase of the international programme, including through\u202fthe international contract\u202fthat will\u202fbe signed by the end of the month.<\/p>\n
