A mental health campaigner tragically took his own life after buying items online, a jury has ruled.<\/p>\n
Lucas Chapman from Nelson<\/a> died at the Royal Blackburn Hospital on November 9 in 2024. The 24-year-old, parent to a little boy called Dylan, had taken a substance he had purchased online which caused his death.<\/p>\n LancsLive is not publishing the name of the substance which Lucas used to take his own life. It was purchased online from Ukraine as other countries prohibit the substance being sold to individuals.<\/p>\n Following an inquest heard before Area Coroner Kate Bisset earlier this month a jury returned a conclusion of suicide and said: “On 9th November 2024 at Royal Blackburn<\/a> Hospital, Lucas Elijah Jon CHAPMAN died having consumed […] which he had previously purchased online.”<\/p>\n Lucas, a health care assistant who was born in Great Yarmouth, was a keen rugby player and was a member of Typhoons RUFC which describes itself as Lancashire’s first inclusive rugby club. He also volunteered for Young Minds which provides support for youngsters struggling with mental health issues.<\/p>\n After his death the rugby club posted online: “We are saddened to announce that one of our former members, Lucas Chapman passed away over the weekend.<\/p>\n “Many in the club will have known Lucas, having played union and\/or touch with him. Lucas, despite his size and lack of confidence was a scrappy player who was determined to improve and put his best foot forward on the pitch.<\/p>\n “He was very open about his struggles with mental health and his transition but didn\u2019t shy away from it, instead giving the issues and challenges a voice and a platform. He really championed us as a club and the impact being part of the club was having on his life.<\/p>\n “Lucas regularly attended matches, socials and pride events with us, did interviews about his positive experiences with us and was an advocate for the LGBTQI+ community.<\/p>\n “Over the years many of us supported him on and off the pitch and although he stepped away from the club he was still in contact with a number of us so I know his passing will be difficult to comprehend.”<\/p>\n Young Minds also published a tribute to Lucas. His lead worker, Lauren, wrote: “Lucas loved YoungMinds and we loved him, he was deeply passionate about young people\u2019s mental health and worked in the health care sector as he got older.<\/p>\n “He also loved playing rugby with his inclusive rugby team. And he loved his beautiful child Dylan and all the adventures and challenges that parenthood brings.<\/p>\n “There’s no denying that Lucas struggled intensely with his mental health and had some incredibly difficult times in his life. But he also cared deeply about making changes to the systems that although were hugely supportive to him, sometimes struggled to meet his diverse needs.”<\/p>\n When life is difficult, Samaritans are available day or night, 365 days a year.
