(Photo by Christopher Furlong\/Getty Images)\" class=\"wp-image-4477301\"  \/>Burnham faces a tough task to defeat Reform in Makerfield (Photo: Christopher Furlong\/Getty)<\/p>\n<p>It defies a <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/kill-state-pension-triple-lock-burnham-told-4467106?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growing chorus of voices<\/a> \u2013 including from former prime minister Sir Tony Blair and Labour\u2019s cost of living tsar and Iceland boss Lord Richard Walker \u2013 who say it is no longer \u201caffordable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Labour MPs who agree with Blair are frustrated that comments by Burnham could push a triple lock replacement further into the distance.<\/p>\n<p>However, they still hope there is growing momentum behind calls to start to reform the state pension beyond the general election expected in 2028 or 2029.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There is fear of losing older voters\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Burnham] says that now, but he could shift in future,\u201d one Labour MP said. \u201cTo be fair he has a by-election to win \u2013 so I don\u2019t blame him for saying it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing to stop us saying: \u2018We\u2019re protecting it in this Parliament, but we\u2019ve commissioned a big study to look at it for the next Parliament and the future\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is fear of losing older voters. We don\u2019t need to be so afraid. It\u2019s the right thing to do,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can try to make the argument and say: \u2018This is how we\u2019ll support you if you\u2019re [a pensioner] in poverty in a way that\u2019s affordable and sustainable\u2019. Pretending it\u2019s not a problem isn\u2019t an option forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One Labour MP, also keen to replace the triple lock, said they understood why it was politically necessary for Burnham to uphold the 2024 pledge. \u201cIt was a manifesto commitment, so it should be protected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the MP still hopes there can be a debate about dropping the triple lock commitment in the next Labour general election manifesto.<\/p>\n<p>They want a discussion about finding a cheaper mechanism to increase the state pension. \u201cWe have to win the argument on scrapping it [the triple lock] and outline the benefits for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the idea of losing pensioner votes, the MP added: \u201cIt\u2019s a risk \u2013 it\u2019s why politicians won\u2019t do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Breaking pledge would be \u2018politically disastrous\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Another Labour MP, who is keen to reform the triple lock, said it was \u201cvery sensible\u201d for Burnham to uphold the 2024 commitment.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking it now \u201cafter the winter fuel debacle would be politically disastrous\u201d, they said \u2013 referring to the botched attempt to scrap <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/money\/pensions-and-retirement\/retirees-state-pension-winter-fuel-payment-tax-4061965?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pensioners\u2019 universal winter fuel payments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The figure still hopes for a debate on the triple lock, but accepts that changing the mechanism may be a gradual process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTriple lock reform \u2013 it\u2019s not abolition as it might need to stay for low-income pensioners \u2013 is a long-term project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Labour Growth Group (LGG), a centrist group of MPs, recently said money going to the triple lock could be better used on working-age people \u2013 describing it as a matter of \u201cintergenerational fairness\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Curtis, co-chair of the LGG, has said the triple lock \u201cinevitably cannot last forever\u201d. His backbench colleague Graeme Downie said older people should \u201ccontinue to be supported\u201d \u2013 but that Labour must be \u201cunashamed about saying we are about the next generation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Burnham faces calls to keep triple lock into 2030s<\/p>\n<p>However, former pensions minister Steve Webb has argued there is a good case for keeping the triple lock for \u201cat least another couple of Parliaments\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The former Lib Dem minister previously said it was brought in to <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/politics\/labour-mps-secretly-agree-blair-state-pension-triple-lock-should-axed-4442413?ico=in-line_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cundo 30 years of damage\u201d to the state pension<\/a> after it fell far behind wage increases.<\/p>\n<p>Ditching the guarantee would be highly politically risky, Webb also warned. \u201cThere aren\u2019t many votes in taking money away from pensions and spending on young people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Left-wing Labour MPs backing Burnham oppose any move to abandon the triple lock.
