The industrialist Edward Betts was so delighted with the epic work in 1859 that he paid \u00a3800 – \u00a3200 above the fee Landseer had requested.<\/p>\n
A banking crisis forced Betts to sell the work, along with the rest of his collection in 1868.<\/p>\n
As a result, Scene in Braemar set a record when it sold for 4,000 guineas.<\/p>\n
In 1857, The Times praised it as “masterly in conception and effect” and a worthy partner to Monarch of the Glen.<\/p>\n
By 1868 it changed hands again when it was sold at auction at Christie’s and entered the art collection of Henry William Ferdinand Bolckow. <\/p>\n
When he died, 70 of the works – including Braemar – were sold in 1887.<\/p>\n
The writer Beatrix Potter described it as “splendid” and singled out Braemar as “one of the leading pictures”.<\/p>\n
It was then acquired by Sir Edward Cecil Guinness and remained in his family until its last auction appearance in 1994.<\/p>\n
The work has been exhibited in public galleries on a number of occasions.<\/p>\n
