{"id":644339,"date":"2026-06-17T23:54:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T23:54:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/644339\/"},"modified":"2026-06-17T23:54:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T23:54:11","slug":"its-a-myth-that-bristol-is-the-uks-coolest-city-bristol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/644339\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s a myth that Bristol is the UK\u2019s coolest city | Bristol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The renaming of the SS Great Britain as Bristol Dockyards is not exactly exciting (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/jun\/11\/ss-great-britain-maritime-landmark-rebrand-bristol-dockyards\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brunel\u2019s SS Great Britain site drops historical name in \u2018cool\u2019 rebrand, 11 June<\/a>), but what continually annoys me as a native and resident Bristolian is the persistence of the myth that this is \u201cthe UK\u2019s coolest city\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Bristol has several of the most deprived communities in the UK, a massive inequality problem, the biggest homelessness and van-dweller problem outside London, and a massive issue with litter and fly-tipping. Added to which we have no decent public transport, only hugely expensive buses, so the roads are gridlocked daily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">This myth is perpetuated by the privileged alumni of Bristol University, now prominent in the media, who barely ever stepped out of Clifton and its leafy surrounds and are in total ignorance of the vast former council estates that are huge centres of deprivation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Please change the tune, and we may then get some government input to improve this two-tier city.<br \/>Jane Ghosh<br \/>Bristol<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"> Have an opinion on anything you\u2019ve read in the Guardian today?
