LONDON (AFP) \u2014 Britain\u2019s competition watchdog introduced new rules Wednesday requiring Google to be more fair and transparent in how it ranks search results, as part of moves tackling the technology giant\u2019s dominance.<\/p>\n
The Competition and Markets Authority designated Google with \u201cstrategic market status\u201d last year, subjecting it to special requirements under new targeted measures focused on technology giants.<\/p>\n
Under new requirements announced on Wednesday, Google must rank results using \u201cobjective and non-discriminatory criteria\u201d and give businesses more information about how rankings work.<\/p>\n

\u201cSearch is a vital gateway for businesses in the U.K. to reach customers, and clearer, predictable and more transparent ranking systems could give them greater scope to expand and invest,\u201d said Will Hayter, CMA executive director for digital markets.<\/p>\n
Google has six months to comply with the ranking rules and three months for the data requirements.<\/p>\n
The latest rules follow a requirement imposed earlier this month on Google to allow U.K. website owners to opt out of having their content used by its AI search feature.<\/p>\n
The authority said it expects to announce further conduct requirements over summer.<\/p>\n
