Meanwhile, a larger number of ‘signature events’ would also be added with expanded fields of 120 players and cuts after the first two rounds.<\/p>\n
To facilitate the promotion and relegation, tournaments would be given ‘track one’ and ‘track two’ status.<\/p>\n
Among those ‘track two’ events include the Canadian Open, which was won by Bud Cauley in Ontario on Sunday.<\/p>\n
McIlroy<\/a> fears events deemed to be ‘track two’ will suffer as a result of the proposed changes.<\/p>\n READ MORE GOLF NEWS<\/p>\n Meanwhile, he has urged for the PGA Tour<\/a> to consider the success of the tour prior to LIV Golf’s emergence in 2021.<\/p>\n Speaking at a press conference ahead of this week’s US Open<\/a>, McIlroy was asked about his concerns over the new-look schedule.<\/p>\n The six-time major winner admitted: “An event like last week, the Canadian Open, is potentially going to one of these track twos.<\/p>\n “Track two is a glorified Korn Ferry event, that’s what track two is going to be, so I don’t think the Canadian Open should be one of those.<\/p>\n “I just think there’s going to be certain events that might lose their stature if a sponsor doesn’t pony up $30million (\u00a322m), so that’s the tough thing.<\/p>\n 3<\/p>\n McIlroy believes the PGA Tour should return to the format used before LIV Golf’s formationCredit: Getty<\/p>\n “I’m not in those rooms. I don’t know. I play my schedule and I’ll continue to play my schedule, which is getting less and less as the years go on.<\/p>\n “It’s funny that as they’ve done all this work, you start to realise that the way the PGA Tour was before LIV came along was actually pretty good. It was a pretty good structure, and everything sort of worked pretty well.<\/p>\n “LIV created this false economy where we had to up prize funds and had to cut fields and try to support the top players and all that stuff, which I think needed to happen because that was the only way to retain talent at the time.<\/p>\n “Now that LIV looks like it’s less of a threat, I think the old ways of the PGA Tour weren’t actually that bad.”<\/p>\n LIV was founded in 2021 before launching with an inaugural season the following year.<\/p>\n Whilst a host of PGA Tour stars defected to the Saudi-backed league, its future is now in doubt after the Public Investment Fund withdrew financial backing<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n 3<\/p>\n McIlroy is aiming to win his seventh major at this week’s US OpenCredit: Getty<\/p>\n Brooks Koepka has already returned to the PGA Tour<\/a>, whilst Patrick Reed is eligible to make a comeback in August after leaving LIV.<\/p>\n When does McIlroy play at the US Open?<\/p>\n McIlroy is currently preparing to contest the US Open<\/a> at Shinnecock Hills this week.<\/p>\n The year’s third major gets underway in New York on Thursday.<\/p>\n It will be the first time the event has been staged at Shinnecock Hills since 2018, which saw McIlroy miss the cut.<\/p>\n Read More on talkSPORT<\/p>\n Meanwhile, he is eyeing his first win since successfully defending the Masters in April.<\/p>\n The 2011 US Open champion begins his opening round at 12.52pm alongside Ludvig Aberg<\/a> and Tommy Fleetwood<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rory McIlroy has made it very clear he has concerns over the PGA Tour’s planned new-look schedule.
