\u2018She should still be here,\u2019 Nadine Coyle tells us as she remembers her close friend and bandmate Sarah Harding.<\/p>\n

Metro sat down with the singer in London ahead of the five year anniversary of Sarah\u2019s death after being diagnosed with advanced breast cancer<\/a> in August 2020.<\/p>\n

She died in September 2021<\/a> at the age of just 39.<\/p>\n

Nadine has vowed to raise awareness ever since, now partnering with tombola and Breast Cancer Now<\/a> with a nationwide call to action<\/a> to check in with a friend and remind them to check their breasts.<\/p>\n

\u2018There are so many people I know personally who thought they were too young for it to affect them that have discovered something, got treated early, and are now fine,\u2019 Nadine, 40,\u00a0 explains.<\/p>\n

\u2018That\u2019s all because of Sarah\u2019s unfortunate situation. She\u2019s helped so many people already.\u2019<\/p>\n

Since Sarah\u2019s death, Nadine and her fellow Girls Aloud bandmates, who were put together on Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, have completed a 30-date tour<\/a> across the UK and Ireland as a four-piece and fundraised to continue to keep her memory alive<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018There\u2019s an adjustment period after loss before you start trying to live life to the fullest for them. Even when she was really ill she didn\u2019t want anyone being sad,\u2019 Nadine tells us.<\/p>\n

\u2018She would be so pleased with what she\u2019s left behind. She wouldn\u2019t imagine in her wildest dreams that she would lead this huge legacy of saving lives.\u2019<\/p>\n

Despite being one of the UK\u2019s most successful girl bands and redefining reality TV acts, Girls Aloud didn\u2019t always have it easy.<\/p>\n

Nadine, alongside her bandmates Sarah, Cheryl, Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts, were at the height of their success in an era of exhausting schedules<\/a>, extreme scrutiny, and misogyny.<\/p>\n

During the early 2000s, the girls recalled that they would be out partying before going straight to work, often getting into bed just moments before their call for hair and makeup to get ready to perform for thousands. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Those infamous nights out even cruelly earned Sarah the nickname Hardcore Harding.<\/p>\n

\u2018The industry hasn\u2019t improved as much as it should have,\u2019 Nadine tells us.<\/p>\n

\u2018It hasn\u2019t moved forward as much as it should. I think back to things and think \u201cOh my god, how was that even legal?\u201d It\u2019s probably not! But it\u2019s just the way it was.<\/p>\n

\u2018At least now there\u2019s more conversation around things that are absolutely inappropriate. But I think we have to keep going and we still have a real fight on our hands.\u2019<\/p>\n

Hitting the road again in 2024 without Sarah was undoubtedly hard <\/a>for the girls, with the tour shows featuring touching vocal and visual tributes throughout.<\/p>\n

\u2018I felt her absence every single night on tour and it was really emotionally draining because you\u2019re going through it with an audience who loves her,\u2019 Nadine tells us.<\/p>\n

\u2018They didn\u2019t get a proper chance to say goodbye.<\/p>\n

\u2018There would be moments where you\u2019d expect to see her on stage and she\u2019s not there. But it was good for fans to have that moment with us, a shared experience of the sadness.\u2019<\/p>\n

Despite unimaginable grief, Sarah\u2019s impact on her friends, family, fans, music, and women has been undeniable, Nadine says.<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019ve even started reading more because of her,\u2019 she laughs.<\/p>\n

\u2018She was so intelligent and classy. I want to be more studious like our Sarah.\u2019<\/p>\n
