When Love Island<\/a> returned to screens for its 13th series this month, it was met with just 600,000 viewers: the lowest number of eyeballs on the bikini-clad reality dating show<\/a> since the series began a decade ago, and lower than any launch of Big Brother<\/a> on ITV2<\/a> ever. <\/p>\n

It seemed safe to say that the nation had fallen out of love<\/a> with watching carbon copy heterosexual hot people pulling each other for a chat. The format was tired and the \u201cmy type on paper\u201d one-liners had grown predictable. For a \u201creality\u201d series<\/a>, the vapid exchanges didn\u2019t reflect real-world dating discussions around background, worldview, or gender politics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Enter: Jasmine Gaziza M\u00fcller, a 27-year-old fashion business owner from London with Iranian, Indian, and Danish heritage who, alongside running her brand, Mahila Intimates, hosts an anti-brainrotting social media series called \u201cSmart Girl Scroll\u201d in which she recommends everything from essays on the rise of anti-intellectualism to Payal Kapadia\u2019s Palme d’Or-nominated Mumbai-set drama All We Imagine as Light<\/a>.<\/p>\n

M\u00fcller, to be concise, is smart, articulate \u2013 and hasn\u2019t been afraid to show it. While in the 2018 season four contestant Hayley Hughes went viral for asking whether Liverpool (where she lived) was a country or a county, M\u00fcller has conversely given Love Island<\/a>\u2019s latest season a second lease of life online by pointing out and dismantling patriarchy in the villa. <\/p>\n

When M\u00fcller criticised male contestants for saying women<\/a> who love attention are red flags (\u201cI think that shows insecurity\u201d), she was dubbed \u201coff-putting\u201d by the brother of the man she\u2019s dating. The group of boys then later whined about the unfairness of women being able to speak frankly about their behaviour, while they\u2019d be lambasted if roles were reversed. This so-called \u201chypocrisy\u201d is the manosphere\u2019s favourite qualm. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou guys are moping around like children,\u201d M\u00fcller told them. \u201cWe have been disrespected in a line, all of us,\u201d she added in a later discussion. \u201cAnd you guys want to talk about double standards. Do you know the lives that women live; the double standards that we live every day? If for one second we want to have the upper leg, I think you can give us that.\u201d <\/p>\n

In another chat with her partner\u2019s brother, she hammered home: \u201cA lot of you in here are not used to women having really strong opinions and it\u2019s showing.\u201d Her victim, Aidan, then retorted: \u201cI feel like that\u2019s the same maybe on your behalf as well,\u201d before M\u00fcller, with lethal precision, countered: \u201cWhat? Men with strong opinions? That\u2019s my everyday life.\u201d <\/p>\n

Not since season three, when Camilla Thurlow asked Jonny Mitchell whether he was a feminist (\u201cI feel like feminism believes in inequality,\u201d he replied), has Love Island<\/a> so clearly demonstrated the ideological divide present in modern dating. An analysis of survey data found in 2024<\/a> that young women have rapidly become more liberal, while young men have become more conservative, or taken longer to become progressive \u2013 and now we\u2019re finally seeing it play out on our screens. <\/p>\n

Lately, life in the Love Island villa has finally become \u2013 much like in many instances in the outside world \u2013 less about women acting a certain way to make men like them, and more about women scoping out whether men like them for who they actually are: real people, with real opinions. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re projecting onto me a version of me that you want,\u201d M\u00fcller told her current partner, Kavan, when he questioned her behaviour. \u201cThis is who I am. I am opinionated. I will ride with my girls till the end and I want my man to ride with me to the end.\u201d Was it Shakespeare? Certainly not. But it was a refreshingly astute reaction that many viewers have related to. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey need to release a second hour of just what Jasmine did that day, please,\u201d one person begged the show\u2019s producers on TikTok. \u201cWait, is Love Island watchable again?!\u201d another asked, astonished. \u201cYeah. It’s not the same boring conversations that we’ve had for the last few seasons,\u201d a third person replied, alongside calls to give M\u00fcller her own show. <\/p>\n

M\u00fcller is inarguably beautiful \u2013 but she has shown, swiftly and assertively, that this is the least interesting thing about her. At a time when filler is flogged at bargain basement prices and the \u201cperfect body\u201d is just a weekly jab away, anyone with a bit of money can adhere to Love Island\u2019s beauty standards; Not everyone can have an overt interest in the world or a dedication to being well-read.
