Ur\u0161ka \u017digart has been taken to the hospital for treatment following a late-race crash on stage 2<\/a> at the Tour de Suisse Women<\/a> on Thursday. Her team, AG Insurance-Soudal, confirmed in an official medical update following the stage that \u017digart has fractured her jaw, with no other injuries.<\/p>\n

“Following her crash in the final kilometre of Stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse Women, Ur\u0161ka \u017digart was immediately attended to by the race medical team and team doctor before being transferred to hospital for further examinations,” the team confirmed in a medical update.<\/p>\n

“After undergoing several medical assessments, Ur\u0161ka has been diagnosed with a fractured jaw. Fortunately, no other injuries were detected during the examinations.”<\/p>\n

\u017digart<\/a> was part of the lead group over the final two ascents of the 105.6km race in Locarno, but lost contact and was then involved in a crash in the run-in to the finish line.<\/p>\n

Video footage of the incident emerged, showing \u017digart hitting a bump in the road just ahead of the red kite signalling the final kilometre. The bump was not a traffic-calming speed bump but a change in road level, marked in orange paint and indicated by race marshals.<\/p>\n

However, at speed, it provided a sharp jolt that destabilised several riders, with Sarah Van Dam (Visma-Lease a Bike) suffering a big wobble on her way to second place, and \u017digart crashing heavily soon after.<\/p>\n

\u017digart was classified as having finished the race and given a time of 2:15 behind stage winner Elisa Longo Borghini (UAE Team ADQ).<\/p>\n

AG Insurance-Soudal have stated that \u017digart received initial treatment from the event and team medical teams onsite at the finish of the race, before being taken to the hospital for additional assessment, treatment and recovery.<\/p>\n

“The team’s medical staff are currently evaluating the next steps required to ensure Ur\u0161ka receives the best possible treatment and recovery process. At this stage, our primary focus is on her health and well-being,” the team wrote in the medical update.<\/p>\n

“We would like to thank the race medical team, hospital staff and everyone who has sent messages of support following the incident. Everyone at AG Insurance-Soudal wishes Ur\u0161ka a smooth and speedy recovery.”<\/p>\n

Just yesterday, \u017digart spoke about her experience in a crash while descending on the final day of the Giro d’Italia, which she said had left her feeling less confident on the descents<\/a> during the opening stage of the Tour de Suisse.<\/p>\n

During the incident at the Giro, \u017digart managed to get back up, remount and forge on to take 12th on the stage and eighth overall. However, she told CyclingProNet following stage 1 of the Tour de Suisse in Sondrio that, “it was pretty scary. I was hanging over the barrier and, yeah, I’m still feeling a bit scared of that moment.”<\/p>\n

The Slovenian has become one of the top stage racers in the world, especially in the mountains.
