Here&#8217;s What They Found"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s a good time to be a Europa fan\u2014scientists keep announcing new insights into the distant, icy world. And this time, the results come from more than a decade\u2019s worth of radio study of Europa.<\/p>\n<p>The findings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-38ah-bRjs4&amp;t=760s\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">presented<\/a> at the American Astronomical Society\u2019s 248th meeting, suggest that the way Europa\u2019s surface scatters radio waves is distinctly different from those seen on rocky worlds. Overall, the data is consistent with the major radar study of Europa, which took place between the 1980s and the 1990s. However, the latest observations are \u201cmore numerous and cover a much broader rotational phase of Europa,\u201d explained Tunhui Xie, a PhD student at the University of California, Los Angeles, who was involved in the work, during the presentation.<\/p>\n<p> Distant icy worlds <\/p>\n<p>Jupiter, our solar system\u2019s biggest planet, has a whopping 101 moons. But of particular interest to scientists are Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto, which researchers suspect hosts subsurface oceans beneath their icy crusts. Naturally, astronomers have been paying close attention to whatever data they could gather from these moons. As of now, NASA\u2019s Europa Clipper and ESA\u2019s Juice are on their way to study this neighborhood up close.<\/p>\n<p>That said, there are only so many geologic features that can tell us about anything much lower than the surface, noted the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in a <a href=\"https:\/\/public.nrao.edu\/news\/gbt-europa-radar\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> on the findings. And that\u2019s where things like radar come in, Xie added in the NRAO statement, saying that \u201cradio waves can penetrate into the ice and carry information about its internal structure and purity,\u201d added Xie.<\/p>\n<p> As the waves bounce <\/p>\n<p>The new study looked at 13 years worth of data collected between 2011 and 2024.\u00a0One fascinating observation concerned Europa\u2019s radar albedo, which is a measure of how bright the moon appears to radar. Specifically, Europa\u2019s radar albedo was much higher than that of planets and rocky worlds. The way Europa scattered the radar signal highly resembled a \u201challmark of multiple scattering inside clean, porous ice,\u201d explained the NRAO.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the team confirmed that Europa\u2019s radar brightness remained more or less consistent, even with shifts in the observational angle between the transmitter, Europa, and the receiver. This tendency allowed the team to effectively place a new limit on how transparent Europa\u2019s ice will be and, therefore, how far below the surface radio telescopes will be able to see, the statement added.
