\n\tA year after sending shockwaves through the television industry with news<\/a> of their unexpected alliance, France\u2019s\u00a0TF1<\/a>\u00a0Group and\u00a0Netflix\u00a0are now officially launching their landmark distribution partnership.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\tStarting June 19,\u00a0Netflix\u00a0subscribers in France will be able to access content from TF1+, the VOD service of the country\u2019s largest commercial network, directly within the platform, at no extra cost to their existing subscription.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe launch gives subscribers live broadcasts from\u00a0five channels, TF1, TMC, TFX,\u00a0TF1\u00a0S\u00e9ries Films and the 24-hour news channel LCI, alongside thousands of hours of on-demand programming. Major sporting events, including Rugby Nations Championship matches and France\u2019s national football team games, are available through the service as well. The lineup spans some of\u00a0TF1\u2019s biggest ratings hits from daily soaps \u201cDemain nous appartient\u201d and \u201cIci tout commence\u201d to scripted series such as \u201cDipl\u00f4me,\u201d \u201cZodiaque\u201d and \u201cLa Cible.\u201d It also puts powerhouse entertainment franchises including \u201cKoh-Lanta,\u201d \u201cSecret Story,\u201d \u201cDancing With the Stars\u201d and \u201cStar Academy\u201d in front of\u00a0Netflix\u2019s subscriber base.<\/p>\n

\n\tRather than licensing\u00a0TF1\u00a0programming title by title,\u00a0Netflix\u00a0is effectively becoming a gateway to the\u00a0TF1+ service itself \u2014 a model the European media sector has scrutinized since it was announced and will likely serve as a key test case for broadcasters and streamers seeking to retain and grow audiences who spend more and more time on YouTube<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe deal has raised pointed questions over rights for producers and distributors whose deals with TF1 were struck before the\u00a0Netflix\u00a0partnership emerged. While neither side has publicly detailed how rights issues were resolved,\u00a0it appears that TF1\u00a0is responsible for securing and managing the rights, as it does for other distribution deals with third-party platforms and connected devices in France. Access to TF1+ content on Netflix is also being limited to France, but TF1+ has the ambition to expand across all French-speaking territories and potentially beyond. <\/p>\n

Although TF1\u00a0is been folded into\u00a0Netflix, it retains responsibility for programming, advertising sales and rights management, while\u00a0Netflix\u00a0supplies distribution, the product experience and its recommendation technology. Neither company has disclosed how advertising revenue is divided between them.<\/p>\n

\n\tBoth companies are betting heavily on personalization to unlock new audiences for genres that have traditionally sat outside\u00a0Netflix\u2019s core offering \u2014 live television, reality competition formats, soaps, news and sport.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPeople have more entertainment choices than ever, so we have to consistently give them the best variety of TV and films in a seamless and personalized way,\u201d said Greg Peters, co-CEO of\u00a0Netflix. \u201cOur partnership with\u00a0TF1\u00a0brings together two strong, complementary content offerings in a world-class user experience, delivering even more entertainment value for our members in France.\u201d
TF1\u00a0Group CEO Rodolphe Belmer said the launch marks a new chapter for the broadcaster\u2019s distribution strategy and audience reach.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m thrilled to see this groundbreaking partnership with\u00a0Netflix\u00a0come to life,\u201d said Belmer. \u201cNetflix\u00a0subscribers will now get to enjoy the very best of\u00a0TF1\u00a0television like never before \u2014 from our news programs and biggest rugby and football matches to beloved shows like Star Academy and Koh-Lanta, and major drama events like \u00c9t\u00e9 36. By combining our programming with the power of\u00a0Netflix\u2019s recommendations, we will reach new audiences together and open up new opportunities for our advertisers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBelmer previously told Variety that the partnership reflected the reality of evolving viewing habits and an opportunity to bring\u00a0TF1\u00a0programming to audiences wherever they choose to watch \u2014 a stance that surprised many observers at the time, given the often-fraught relationship between traditional broadcasters and global streaming platforms.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe launch also deepens a relationship that already extends beyond distribution. The companies have collaborated on a growing slate of projects, including the upcoming World War II drama \u201cJackdaws,\u201d<\/a> based on Ken Follett\u2019s bestseller and starring Laetitia Casta, alongside high-profile titles such as \u201cThe Countess of Monte Cristo.\u201d<\/p>\n
