{"id":64669,"date":"2025-08-13T19:03:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-13T19:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/64669\/"},"modified":"2025-08-13T19:03:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T19:03:09","slug":"monica-seles-names-the-current-wta-player-who-she-loves-to-watch-ahead-of-the-us-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/64669\/","title":{"rendered":"Monica Seles names the current WTA player who she &#8216;loves&#8217; to watch ahead of the US Open"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One of the tennis legends looking forward to the US Open is Monica Seles.<\/p>\n<p>The 51-year-old is one of greatest players of all time and arguably the best teenager to ever grace the sport.<\/p>\n<p>She won eight of her nine Grand Slams before the age of 20, two of which she won at the <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/us-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US Open<\/a> in 1991 and 1992.<\/p>\n<p>33 years after her second and final triumph at Flushing Meadows, Monica Seles has named one player in particular she is looking forward to watching in New York this season.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"670\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/GettyImages-2169784866-1024x670.jpg\" alt=\"Coco Gauff gets ready to return serve at the 2024 US Open - Day 7\" class=\"wp-image-318465\" \/>Photo by Jamie Squire\/Getty ImagesMonica Seles loves to watch Coco Gauff play and she will be keeping an eye on her at the US Open<\/p>\n<p>The US Open will mark the final chance for players to clinch a Grand Slam title this season.<\/p>\n<p>The competitors are using events such as the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/cincinnati-open\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cincinnati Open<\/a> to gain form and more ranking points in a bid to be best positioned for a strong run at the US Open.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/aryna-sabalenka\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aryna Sabalenka<\/a> will enter the tournament as the defending champion after beating Jessica Pegula to win her first US Open in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The year before, Sabalenka lost to <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/tag\/coco-gauff\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coco Gauff<\/a> in the final, which marked the world number two\u2019s first taste of success at Grand Slam level.<\/p>\n<p>During an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/Culture\/video\/tennis-champion-monica-seles-talks-us-open-career-124574536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Good Morning America via ABC News<\/a>, Seles shared that she enjoys watching Gauff play and was thrilled to see her win her home major in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love [Coco] Gauff, the electricity she brought two years ago to the Open,\u201d Seles shared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously we have a couple of youngsters coming up and as a tennis fan, you know that saying, we just want some great matches and the excitement of the fans at the Open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Monica Seles has provided a worrying health update<\/p>\n<p>During her interview with Good Morning America, Seles revealed she was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>This is a neuromuscular autoimmune disease which causes muscle weakness. She first started experiencing symptoms, which were affecting her eyes, approximately five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Seles explained that she wanted to go public with her condition to help raise awareness around it, especially ahead of the US Open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would be playing [tennis] with some kids or family members, and I would miss a ball,\u201d Seles told The Associated Press. \u201cI was like, \u2018Yeah, I see two balls.\u2019 These are obviously symptoms that you can\u2019t ignore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took me quite some time to really absorb it, speak openly about it, because it\u2019s a difficult one.
