(Image: PA)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  A third consecutive increase was recorded in 2024\/25, when the median waiting time rose to 75 minutes, before a slight dip to 72 minutes this year.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cEvery week patients in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/local-news\/edinburgh-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Edinburgh<\/a> and across Scotland are facing dangerously long waits for urgent care in A&amp;E,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/scottish-labour\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Scottish Labour<\/a> MSP for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/local-news\/edinburgh-news\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Edinburgh<\/a> and Lothians East <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/26121075.anas-sarwar-defends-irshad-ahmed-israel-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Irshad Ahmed<\/a> said in response to The Herald\u2019s findings.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cOver the last five years average A&amp;E waits in Edinburgh have soared, countless patients have been put at risk and hardworking staff have been put under huge amounts of pressure.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cIn the election <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/25074444.john-swinney-news-interviews-updates-fm\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">John Swinney<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/snp\/?ref=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">SNP<\/a> promised to tackle the A&amp;E crisis and now they need to deliver,\u201d he added.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The increase has taken place despite an increase in staffing and spending in the health board&#8217;s three emergency departments over the last half-decade.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  In 2021\/22, NHS Lothian employed the equivalent of 284.45 full time emergency department staff, paid a total of \u00a319,110,913.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  By 2025\/26, these figures had risen to 319.73 and \u00a327,220,047, respectively.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The health board operates emergency departments at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, St John&#8217;s Hospital in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/local-news\/livingston-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Livingston<\/a>, and the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  LibDem MSP for Edinburgh Northern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/26097195.lib-dem-sanne-dijkstra-downie-stay-edinburgh-councillor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sanne Dijkstra-Downie<\/a> said the figures were illustrative of Scotland\u2019s struggling social care system.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThe increase in waiting times illustrates just how badly served our NHS is under the SNP,\u201d she remarked. \u201cThings have gone from bad to worse on their watch.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;It&#8217;s also important to remember that Edinburgh is a growing city, but we are only served by one A&amp;E in the south of the city.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ms Dijkstra-Downie added: \u201cThe only way to cut these waits is to fix the broken social care system. The gaps in community care are a bottleneck that\u2019s causing 2,000 people a night to be marooned in hospital when they don\u2019t need or want to be there.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cYou simply cannot fix the NHS without fixing social care.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Tory MSP Miles Briggs. (Image: PA)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Tory list MSP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/miles-briggs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Miles Briggs<\/a> added: \u201cThis sharp increase in waiting times in one of our country\u2019s largest health boards pours cold water on the SNP\u2019s claims that the NHS is improving on their watch.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u00a0\u201cDespite a series of recovery plans unveiled by a succession of SNP health secretaries, patients in my region are still having to put up with unacceptable delays for treatment.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cHardworking staff are being run ragged, and patients are continuing to suffer across NHS Lothian as a result of the nationalists\u2019 mismanagement,\u201d Mr Briggs remarked.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u00a0\u201cAll patients attending A&amp;E are triaged upon arrival to ensure those with the most urgent or life-threatening conditions are seen first or immediately,&#8221; Michelle Carr, chief officer for acute hospital services at the health board told The Herald.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u00a0\u201cThe time it takes for a patient to receive diagnosis and treatment, which can be from a multidisciplinary team including doctors, advanced nurse practitioners and specialists, will vary depending on the urgency of their clinical need.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u00a0\u201cOur teams are facing increasing pressure across urgent and emergency care, including an increase in the numbers of patients and more complex cases and patient needs, as well as discharge delays.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u00a0\u201cWe apologise to patients who have waited too long and we would reassure them that we are working hard to improve earlier assessment, patient flow, discharge planning and are working with our colleagues in health and social care partnerships to reduce avoidable delays across the system.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Read more:\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Across Scotland, figures show that the number of people experiencing long waits in emergency departments has fallen slightly over the last week.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  64.3% of patients were seen within the government&#8217;s four-hour target in the week to June 7 \u2013 up from 63.9% the week before.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The percentage of people waiting more than eight hours also decreased, from 11.9% to 11.7%.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Health Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/topics\/angela-constance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Angela Constance<\/a> told the Press Association: \u201cI am committed to improving A&amp;E performance and tackling delays for patients.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cThat\u2019s why we will be publishing a new national plan for improving the flow of patients through our hospitals, from the front door to discharge, within our first 100 days.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"That is an increase of 18 minutes over the five-year period.
