Instead, it positions itself as a living, breathing reflection of the city  shaped by over 100,000 contributors including artists, historians, designers and Londoners themselves.<\/p>\n<p>London Museum will span across multiple spaces within Smithfield\u2019s General Market<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/General-Market-\u2013-Past-Time-c-Secchi-Smith-1024x640.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-408076\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Set within Smithfield\u2019s General Market, the museum unfolds across three interconnected spaces, each offering a distinct way to explore the capital.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors will enter through \u201cReal Time\u201d, a former covered street turned immersive entrance capturing live data and snapshots of contemporary London. <\/p>\n<p>From there, the journey moves into \u201cOur Time\u201d, a bustling central hub beneath the restored market dome, designed as a social space for gathering, events and cultural exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Below ground, \u201cPast Time\u201d takes visitors deep into London\u2019s history, with atmospheric galleries set at Roman street level. <\/p>\n<p>Through a mix of chronological and thematic displays, it traces the evolution of the city from prehistoric settlements to modern-day milestones.<\/p>\n<p>London Museum will have a collection of more than seven million objects \u2014 the largest of any city museum in the world<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Real-Time-National-Heritage-Street-c-Secchi-Smith-The-AOC-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-408078\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Drawing from a collection of more than seven million objects \u2014 the largest of any city museum in the world \u2014 London Museum promises an extraordinary line-up of exhibits.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights include the Lord Mayor\u2019s Coach, Banksy\u2019s \u201cPiranhas\u201d, Charles I\u2019s execution vest, and Emmeline Pankhurst\u2019s hunger strike medal. Visitors can also expect to see the infamous Whitechapel Fatberg, Anna Pavlova\u2019s \u201cDying Swan\u201d costume, and Roman writing tablets from the renowned Bloomberg Collection.<\/p>\n<p>The museum also brings together cultural touchstones from across generations, from punk artefacts like The Clash\u2019s smashed guitar to contemporary protest materials and Olympic memorabilia.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most striking features will be a six-metre viewing window in the subterranean galleries, where Thameslink trains pass through offering a unique intersection of London\u2019s past and present in motion.<\/p>\n<p>Restoring Smithfield \u2013 a historic landmark<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/London-Museum-Houses-\u00a9-Secchi-Smith-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-408077\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Originally opened in 1883, Smithfield\u2019s General Market was designed by Sir Horace Jones, the architect behind Tower Bridge. After decades of decline following its closure in the 1990s, the site has now been meticulously restored by architects Stanton Williams and Asif Khan, alongside conservation specialists Julian Harrap.<\/p>\n<p>The transformation preserves the building\u2019s historic character while introducing cutting-edge sustainability features, including geothermal energy systems and rainwater recycling.
