{"id":649246,"date":"2026-06-20T16:51:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T16:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/649246\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T16:51:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T16:51:08","slug":"david-benavidez-names-the-greatest-mexican-fighter-of-all-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/uk\/649246\/","title":{"rendered":"David Benavidez names the greatest Mexican fighter of all time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/boxingnewsonline.net\/boxer\/david-benavidez\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Benavidez<\/a> has revealed who he sees as Mexico\u2019s greatest-ever fighter, believing the Hall of Famer was in a class of his own when it came to his technical ability.<\/p>\n<p>In a conversation surrounding all-time Mexican greats, Julio Cesar Chavez is often the first name that springs to mind.<\/p>\n<p>This is because he remained undefeated, and became a three-weight world champion, in his first 90 professional fights, before ultimately retiring with a record of 107-6-2 (85 KOs).<\/p>\n<p>Besides a controversial draw with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/boxing\/story\/_\/id\/27196883\/remembering-whitaker-sweet-pea-master-sweet-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pernell Whitaker<\/a> in 1993, Chavez hardly put a foot wrong during his unbeaten run, which came to an end after he lost to Frankie Randall in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>But while acknowledging Chavez\u2019s remarkable achievements, Benavidez feels that Salvador Sanchez should be considered the greatest Mexican fighter of all time.<\/p>\n<p>As the WBC featherweight champion, Sanchez made nine successful title defences before tragically losing his life to a car crash in 1982.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to that, he had a <a href=\"https:\/\/boxingnewsonline.net\/features\/on-this-day-one-month-before-his-death-salvador-sanchez-cements-his-greatness-by-pounding-the-substantial-resistance-out-of-azumah-nelson-in-the-15th-and-final-round\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">15th-round finish over Azumah Nelson<\/a> and engineered another notable stoppage in 1981, this time against Puerto Rico\u2019s Wilfredo Gomez.<\/p>\n<p>As a current champion who appreciates technical mastery, Benavidez told <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/AbI17-ZEVrw?si=Fd9gO2PA_wZRtxsO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Luis Parra<\/a> why he thinks Sanchez was the greatest Mexican to ever step through the ropes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, number one is Salvador Sanchez. The technique he had \u2013 I don\u2019t think there will ever be another fighter quite like Salvador Sanchez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Julio Cesar Chavez, Ricardo Lopez, Marco Antonio Barrera\u2026 Who else? Juan Manuel Marquez. Erik Morales. There are a lot of great fighters. Oscar Valdez is an excellent fighter too. \u2018El Vaquero\u2019 [Emanuel Navarrete] as well.
