It warns that the general population are likely to experience some symptoms and people that are \u2018vulnerable\u2019 to heat have been urged to take extra precautions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This includes people on two common medications; <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/nhs-beta-blockers-warning-call-37298574\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">beta blockers<\/a> and <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/health-advise-people-insulin-metformin-37207740\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">metformin<\/a>. Both drugs are taken by millions of people across the UK and can increase your risk of getting dehydrated in hot <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/all-about\/weather\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">weather<\/a>, interfere with how your body regulates temperature or make the signs of dehydration and heat-related illnesses <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/bbc-doctor-warning-taking-naproxen-37240167\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">harder to spot.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Beta blockers are one of the most commonly used medication to treat heart and circulatory conditions according to the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/informationsupport\/heart-matters-magazine\/medical\/drug-cabinet\/beta-blockers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">British Heart Foundation.<\/a> It is usually prescribed to treat irregular heart rhythms, angina and to lower <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/lifestyle\/health\/ten-ways-banish-high-blood-9621402\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"\">blood pressure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">This medication slows the heart rate and is usually used to treat heart conditions or high blood pressure. Beta blockers specifically had a 65% increase in association between hot weather and heart attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\"><a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/people-metformin-face-unexpected-effect-36931870\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">Metformin<\/a>, insulin and other types of diabetes medication can increase your risk of dehydration while masking the early symptoms. If it\u2019s not addressed, dehydration can lead to worsening symptoms and in extreme cases it can cause kidney and urinary issues, seizures or even brain damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Important symptoms of dehydration:<\/p>\n<p>feeling thirstyheadache and feeling light-headeddark yellow, strong-smelling peepeeing less often than usualfeeling dizzy or lightheadedfeeling tireda dry mouth, lips and tonguesunken eyes<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Dehydration can be easily treated by drinking fluids or by taking oral rehydration solutions that can be prescribed by pharmacists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">People using beta blockers or metformin should not stop their medication just because the weather is heating up. However, they should act quickly if they start to experience any signs of dehydration or symptoms of heat-related illnesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">People over 75 are already at a higher risk of temperature related issues such as heat stroke, heat exhaustion and dehydration. It is the most extreme heat warning that the Met has issued in the last four years, with the last one being issued in August 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Officials have said it will have \u201cwidespread impact\u201d on both people and infrastructure, warning that some people may even have to change their work patterns on these days.
